They make Justin Wilson and Dr. Huthchings sympathetic characters.

Please don't vote for them, even if you don't vote for opponent in EBP case, don't give her your vote.

I have only listened to the first 2 and a half hours of the discussion so far but I think Aguirre, after stumbling to start his comments and questions, was able to draw out a number of pertinent points such as (1) raising questions whether the security steps taken by Hutchings / Contraeas have been adequate, (2) noting the gun on school grounds was discovered without SROs present, and (3) getting Hutchings to admit that he does not know if the security issues would have differed with SROs present. On this last point, Hutchings’ argument was that he needed the SROs since you have to do everything you can for safety which is completely contrary to Hutchings’ approach on Covid mitigation where he dismisses reasonable mitigation steps as too hard.

“My issue here is that you are trying to draw a direct correlation between the removal of SROs and everything else that’s been going on,” Aguirre said.

No Canek, no one is drawing a direct correlation. He is a terrible councilperson.

But that was Aguirre’s point - if Hutchings et al. acknowledge that there is a lack of direct correlation between recent events and the removal of the SROs why is there an urgent need to reinstitute the SRO program.

Because it's all a bandaid. People want these little pacifiers so they can pat themselves on the back and pretend like one officer on a campus of several hundred students will really make a difference and they can feel self righteous until the move on to grind their axe somewhere else.

Meanwhile, school districts across the entire DMV with and without SROS are seeing the same exact problems.

There are just as many security guards as there were before.

Sure that's one grain of sand in the bucket. Another is that Aquirre has no business overriding the concerns of parents and students. He doesn't even have any skin in the game.

He and Aguirre already flipped on “Braddock West”, which is actually in the east, next to the metro station.

Not only are there unresolved flooding issues at Braddock and West, those two were all for more housing…unless it is in their (or their voting base) backyard.

Wait if Chapman was the one who changed his vote, why did he issue that letter with Bennett-Parker, Canek, and Mo against SROs?

I think Council got a message last night over the way they handled the SRO question.
Amy Jackson got the most votes, and is now Vice Mayor. She was also the only returning council member (along with the Mayor) who consistently maintained support for keeping SROs in the schools.
Meanwhile Chapman and Aguirre got back in, but they rode the Democrat wave and they got lower numbers than all but one of the other candidates.

Chapman had the third highest vote total down from the first highest last election. Canek was a few thousand lower and I bet that difference was due to the SRO issue but it was not enough for him to lose to Nirenberg.

!
Apologies. I should have made clear they got lower numbers than all but one of the Democrat candidates! It's a dark blue town, so it takes something truly extraordinary to get a non-Dem in, but I do know that among themselves they pay attention to their "rank" among the votes, so again I say Aguirre and Chapman got a message.
