Yoga before strength training

Anonymous
I do yoga for an hour some mornings followed by an hour of strength training. According to this article, perhaps not a good idea?

Any contrary opinions?

I'm hearing more and more reports about stretching after a workout is preferred and instead doing a warmup/light stretching in the beginning, keeping the "static stretching" at the end of a session.

In your case, how about doing 30 mins of yoga before and after. A hour of yoga right before lifting weights can be taxing to the joints.

I do light stretching/warmups and foam roll before I lift weights, about 15 mins total. Considering I'm over 40 and no longer have the flexibility that I use to have, this routine is a must for me. i would not be able to execute such exercises as heavy squats or deadlifts without it.

Op here. Ive had some great deadlift/ squat sessions following a 1 hr light yoga class. It seems not to hurt me.

I do this about once a week. If I'm immediately following up a power yoga class with a weights workout (vs. having some time in between), I will sometimes go a bit easier during the yoga class or do fewer reps of the weights, just depending on how I feel. I haven't noticed any adverse effects. I also sometimes follow up a power yoga class with a long run, and haven't had any issues with that either.

And as a PP said, the foam roller is a great tool. I roll out my butt after yoga, after weights, or both. I'm 41 and find that this helps a LOT.
