Details on a petition to bring Foreign Language to Tuckahoe Elementary School in Arlington, VA, currently only 13 out of the 22 Arlington, VA Elementary schools offer Foreign Language. A group of Tuckahoe parents are looking for support to petition the Arlington County School Board.

1) Why do you think you deserve to be #2? 2) How do you propose to pay for this? Will your PTA raise the funds? 3) Which FL do you propose be taught? |

Comma splice! Work on your English and then we'll worry about whether the privileged on North Arlington (of which I am one) are getting their due.
I lied. I am not going to worry about that. But your comma splice will still bug me. |

NP Here - I'm not a Tuckahoe parent and my child does have FLES in her school. I think all the schools should have it, but I'm not sure where the board would get the money. I'm pretty sure FLES is Spanish in all the schools.
The PTA can't raise the money for it, though. I asked about the PTA raising money for another "upgrade" at our school and was told that the PTA can't fund that sort of thing since not all PTAs have the ability to raise a large amount of money. |
And how about yours? Hypocritical bitch. |
| i'm not convinced tuckahoe can handle what its already trying to handle, so not sure i support foreign language, too. where the *&^$#*& would they put it -- the place is packed to the gills. |
All I know is that Tuckahoe Rocks -- or so the bumper stickers say.
|
| They can have our FLES. It's totally not worth it and I'd rather have our early release Wednesdays back. |
| Believe me, despite the steamrolling that some parents do because they want what they want when they want it, not everyone at Tuckahoe is looking to bring FLES on board |
| FLES is a money-sucker. I think silently the school board wishes it hadn't been approved due to the costs to keep it running. But now that some schools have it, it will take a miracle to take it away. |
| My 5th grader has been in FLES since 1st grade and just knows various random Spanish words with no conversational skills. She will not get to skip even a year of Spanish in middle school. Next year she'll take 1/2 a year of something called "transitional Spanish" and then have Spanish 1 (if she doesn't decide to take another language instead) in 7th grade. I was a supporter of FLES but as it's implemented I think it's a waste of time that takes precious instructional time away from the core academic subjects. |
| They should just have it as an afterschool program |
| It is afterschool at the non-FLES schools, but parents have to pay. |
Is there a link to a webpage with more information on this? Thanks. |
| I know Nottingham had Spanish as an afterschool enrichment. Those are classes that parents have to pay for. I think the PTAs set up the enrichment classes. That info wouldn't be on a website. It's not the same as having it 3 days a week for all of elementary school. |
