If you take a cab to the airport, what do you do about car seats?

I'm planning to fly solo with my 2 kds (2yo and 4yo) to meet my husband. He has work and we are going to make a trip out of it. Wondering how to get to the airport. I would prefer that DH take all our luggage and I can just show up with 2 kids and a double stroller.

Is there car service that has car seats? Do you take cabs with no car seats?

Won't you need carseats on the other end? Or do you mean you want DH to take the carseats with him and they'll be there waiting for you?

I think it's fine to do the occasional trip without them. If you're sending them with DH, just take a cab without the carseats and all will be fine. Otherwise just take them with you and use them in the cab.

My family has used cabs on a couple occasions without any carseats. I believe it is legal.

Yes, I meant that DH could take the car seats with him. We live in Alexandria and would fly out of Reagan. I would never drive the kids without car seats so it does make me feel uncomfortable. I feel it would be to much of a pain to lug the kids, the double stroller and the car seats. it is hard enough to do that with both parents.

Do cab companies provide carseats?

We just took ours and installed it in the cab.

This is what we do.

Another thought, skip the double stroller and use a car seat/stroller for the 2 year old (either the all in one or the go go kidz) and use the blow up booster type for your 4 year old. Then you have car seats and it is doable for one person.

Wouldn't you just check the carseats curbside when you got to the airport? That's what I do. You could then use them in the cab and not have to deal with them after you arrive at the airport.

When I fly back, I would have 2 kids, the stroller and 2 car seats. My 2yo is a HANDFUL. I'm beginning to think this is just a bad idea. DH has business around July 4th and he really wants us to fly to spend the weekend with him. He has to work before and after the weekend.

I'd tell him to have a Happy Fourth and you'll see him when he gets back. What a hassle for one parent to do just for jollies! But I hate travel hassle, so take me with a grain of salt.

I need the stroller to keep the kids contained at the airport. If we walk long distances, I end up having to carry the 2yo and he is way too heavy now. We do have a travel system with a toddler seat but the 4yo always wants to sit in the stroller too if the younger one is in the stroller.

I can't wait for the kids to be older and I do no have to deal with strollers, diapers and car seats!

I live in CA, and when in a cab, a baby is not required by law to use a car seat.

You have the cab show up, you install the car seats in the back, ride to the airport, get dropped off next to the skycap station, unload the loads, put them in the double stroller, take out the car seats and check them with the skycap. On the other end, you have your husband meet you at the baggage claim and handle the car seats. On the return, your husband drops you off at the airport with the skycap, do the reverse of the above. When you get to the baggage claim, flag down a baggage escort and have him take the car seats and any carryon bags to the curb for you and flag down a cab. Tip him $5-10 and go home.

I am the PP who suggested checking carseats curbside and totally agree with using a baggage escort when you arrive home. I wouldn't be able to travel alone with DS without using the skycaps and baggage escorts. I make sure to have a variety of bills in my wallet to tip everyone.

+1

Re: your handful of a 2 year-old. If you have an Ergo baby carrier lying around your house, you can use it. I've used it with a 2yo several times in an airport when I didn't have a skycap.
