Life after the snap n go

Anonymous
We just moved 6.5 month old DD from her snap n go to a Britax car seat and real stroller, and I HATE it. If she falls asleep in the car, I can no longer take her out into the store without waking her. Also, I cant put her car seat in the shopping cart. She has kind of been sitting in the shopping cart but she is still not steady enough to sit up so well and she keeps falling over. I cant push a stroller and a shopping cart at the same time. Is my only option to wear her while shopping? How do other parents deal with this? What about if she needs to go in someone else's car? Do we have to reinstall the Britax in the other person's car? Should we have a spare car seat for this purpose? Is there a "travel type" car seat that works the same way?

Thanks for any advice

So...why not go back to the other car seat until she is ready? Sounds like she's not quite there yet.

OP here - we switched bc she was growing out of the old car seat. It had a 20 lb weight limit and DD is almost 19 lbs.

Switch back to the other carseat and continue with the snap and go. You should not put baby in a shopping cart seat yet, way too little if they can't sit on their own. Bring a "baby bjorn" like carrier with you and use that when you go shopping. my son loved to be carried around the store.
Your baby should obviously always be in a car seat, so yes you'll need to either get a spare seat, or move yours every time. We had two bases in each of our cars until our son was 1 and was ready to move to a convertable seat, then we had to buy two seats. one for each car.
We have a Costco carseat for travel, very light weight but I think your baby may be too young and small at this point.

Maybe get a new infant seat that has a higher weight limit and then save the convertable seat for later? And yes, we too have a carseat for each car. Much easier that way.

You also can keep the old infant seat in the trunk of your car and continue to put the baby in it when you go into stores, either on the cart or in the snap n go. We also used to do this when we went out to dinner if we thought (hoped!) the baby would fall asleep in the restaurant.

OP here - thanks for the advice. We only have 1 car so we never thought to have 2 seats but today we were going to get a ride with someone and since the snugride (her snap n go car seat) always moved so easily, I never thought about how to move the Britax.
I dont want to buy a new infact seat with a higher weight limit, it seems silly for an additional few lbs but maybe we will switch back until she is officially too big for it.

Thanks again

Hi, I know you said it seems silly to get a bigger infant seat, but you might want to reconsider. We traded up from the snugride to the safeseat(?) which has a 35lb. limit and we kept it until our DD was maybe 13 or 14 months old. For us it was totally worth it to have the flexibility of being able to move her around and to let her continue naps on her schedule. We bought the seat second-hand from a friend. Good luck.

The Chicco Keyfit 30 is a very easy carseat to use and goes up to 30 pounds or 30 inches.

Yes, it might "seem silly" to buy a new seat, but she's going to continually outgrow things for the rest of her life! If you can get 6 more months of being able to carry her in the seat without waking her, isn't that worth it?

If she's close to sitting up, then get a cart cover for some extra padding and place a rolled up baby blanket behind her. When she's strapped into the cart it will give her more stability.

This happened with our DS also. We decided to get the larger car seat and just had to carry him more. Shopping was the worst. We found a cloth seat insert for the carts which had straps (harness) and a piece to cover the front on the cart. We used this for high chairs while we were out also. I'll try to find the name b/c it was much better than most of the other products I ahve seen. Will try to respond with it in a day or two.

Just focusing on the piece of this that deals with riding in other people's cars while the child is in a car seat - that is a hassle and will be for a long time b/c they stay in car seats until they are pretty old. Basically, we just never ever get a ride with someone else unless we are traveling somewhere by plane. We have 2 kids and moving 2 car seats around is way too much of a hassle. Also, they won't fit if the other family has a child and seat themselves and they might mar the other person's seat - if they have nice ophulstery or leather. Its just something that you have to learn to live with once they are out of the babyseat.

I would switch back until she really is 20 pounds. Also, are you sure this is the limit? It seems really low...I know my Graco Snugride is 22 pounds and I thought that was one of the lowest ones.

Also, once they start sitting a little, they improve very quicky, so you'd be surprised what a difference a month will make.

I think it's a little troubling that people are recommending a return to a car seat that's too small. Remember that the infant seats also have height limits.

For example, my little string bean is under 16 pounds but I had to transition him to a big boy seat because he's too tall for the straps.

I've been wondering about shopping myself. To the poster who suggested an insert that has straps, I'm eagerly awaiting a link!

My baby is still in her snugride (she is under both limits) but I wear her in the Ergo while I am grocery shopping. I don't like putting the infant seat in the front of the cart - it seems unsteady to me - and if I put her in the main part of the cart there is no room for food. Also, if I have her in the Ergo I feel safe taking several steps away from the cart to select items to buy.
