Yu Ying Wait list

Anonymous
Current parents can you weigh in?
In the top 10 for preK (but already bumped down two spots in the last hour..)
Yes or No? Are we getting in?

^^ PP did you see the post upthread about last years' numbers/timing of when slots were offered? That is the best, most specific measure anyone has to try to guess this year. What can a current parent tell you beyond that, since there is just no way to know?

You'll probably get in. You'll probably know before May.

Now go pour yourself a good, stiff drink and ride out the next couple of months. Gloat while you are at it, basking in the warm glow of knowing that you have already done everything in your power to try to get your kids into the best situation possible.
Really- go drink. Now.

Not the PP, but have a very good number and already drinking, but not from relief! Anxiety is going to be there until "the call" comes. Can't really relax until then.

PreK waitlist went at least to mid 30s last year. I would celebrate!

It seems to me, if people were showing up at 4am to do this, they're taking the spot. Not sure I would expect as much movement on the list. There is going to be a lot less of the "Wait, Yu Ying is where?" element...

I posted this on the other YY thread as well so I apologize. So there are 72 spots. I'm very curious how many of those went to siblings. If the jumbo preK was two years ago and many people have their children spaced 2 years apart I can imagine that a lot of those spots went to siblings (maybe 1/3?)

It is making me feel a whole lot less confident about my top 10 WL number, especially since we know that #s 1 and 2 will definitely accept.

I think I will drink, but out of sheer anxiety. Certainly feel it is way too early to celebrate.

You will have to call the school and ask how many spots went to sibs. Historically around 1/2 went to sibs/founders but that was before the jumbo class and news about DCI. I almost suspect they listed the acceptances so that people can't tell the # that went to sibs.

It's not the people at the top of the WL who will say no, it's the ones who applied to YY along with 15 or 20 other schools just to get in somewhere. They got the luck of the draw, but don't really care about Chinese and once they get in somewhere closer to home or whatever they'll give up their spots. Those people at the top of the WL seriously want in, second only to parents of younger sibs. My prediction (based on past experience since the school opened) is that at least the top 20 for PreK will get in. It's a great school (we love it!) but Chinese isn't everyone's cup of tea. A lot of people apply just because it's on the "hot school" list and there's nothing to lose in playing the lottery for all of them. Once they've sorted their options and thought about the extra effort YY entails, they'll send their regrets.

I recognize the names of a few younger sibs, it's all in alphabetical order - unless you know them you can't tell if they got in via sibling preference or the lottery. However, I'd be genuinely shocked if HALF went sibs (and there just aren't that many founders btw, not to mention that of those there are, they're all in the school already). That happened exactly one time, for SY 2010-2011, when 25 of the 50 spots went to sibs. Even at its current size, there are not enough 4 y.o. sibs at YY to take 36 seats.

Yes. You are definitely getting in. Okay? Seriously, you're getting in, mostly likely in time for Kidfest.

By the way, you're also detail-oriented and hyper-vigilant, so you will find some birds of a feather.

Now, put down the internet and go get that drink.

OP here. Thank you, that is reassuring. We waited outside because we truly want to attend YY and I'm sad that even though we did our best it just might not have been good enough. I am thankful that I didn't put all of our eggs in one basket and applied to other PCS, one which we were accepted to and 1 good DCPS that we have another very good WL number at..so I'm trying to stay positive. What will be will be!
Hoping to see you next year!

Umm, not sure if I should thank you or feel insulted, but I'll just go with it. Thanks. I hope that you are right. Are you a current parent?
You must remember what it is like to be in my position?

Doubt it's a parent at YY--we're much nicer than that. Just some DCUMer releasing her inner mean girl.....

If you're at the top of the WL, then you showed up *very* early to get there. Plus, if you've noticed your name move two places on the waitlist just since it has been posted, then you've obviously looked at more than once - within a few hours. As you will learn, YY attracts a fair share of Type As; it doesn't mean that we're not nice people, those are not mutually exclusive characteristics.

Relax, if I'm making fun of you, it's really because it's like looking in a mirror.
