I don’t get it either. I’m in Loudoun and I think they should have gone on time yesterday (Thursday!)

Again, stop playing dumb. Some areas had seen plows and salt and people living there assume everything is clear. There are tons of residential area that hadn't seen either and there were even texts/emails issued to parents about alternative bus stops if you don't believe me. Why would they do so had everything been cleared?

Then stay home. Your choice.

I am. Just wanted to make sure it's an excused absence and kids who cannot show up (there will be lots of those) aren't put at a disadvantage with extra work or missed material. Enjoy your child-free time while your kids are watching movies with the pissed off teachers.

HS Teacher here. Of course your kid will be disadvantaged with missed materials? In my courses tomorrow, we are beginning new content.
OK, be a dick on purpose? As a fellow teacher, why on earth would you teach new content tomorrow.

Our elementary admin said to prioritize math and LA and we can start unit 4 benchmark.

Missed material? On a Friday after an almost 3 week break? Okay, Karen.

Then why are people so desperate to send their kids for some benefit they can't quantify? If kids aren't missing anything then the advantage is purely for the parents. Maybe you should ask the AP exams Karens here, I can't answer.

Teachers are being called dicks for doing their jobs now… teachers do not listen to these posters! My kids are excited to go back to learning!
It’s a basic issue of equity. Kids shouldn’t have to choose between a safe commute and missing assignments.

They can catch up. That’s how life goes.

Then you are going to have to restart it after the other half of the class shows up on Monday.

Pretty sure the people complaining about opening were also the ones buying 60 rolls of toilet paper last weekend.

Don’t understand how 1 hour makes such a difference in your classrooms. My students are on track to have Friday as a review day for those who need to stay home

You can catch up on your facials and ladies of leisure lunches too, that's how life goes. But I guess you got your way, enjoy.

Yup. To keep us from doing it. Haha

Teachers aren’t happy about this call.

I’m just surprised. A lot of stress and worry for a short amount of time.

Let's be clear, many of us, Parents aren't happy about this either. Not sure what those who are happy and insisted on this weird one day before the weekend are hoping to gain.

+1. This was such a bad call. What is the point of going to school at 10:30 while the roads are still a mess. My car just skidded on a side street and all the side streets in my neighborhood are a mess. My kids are walkers but there is no way I would be putting my child on a school bus in these conditions. I can’t believe FCPS fell into the pressure of opening up. They should have waited till Monday. The week is pretty much over!

I recognize that it will be some time before every roadway, sidewalk, and bus stop are completely clear,* so please make the decision that is best for your family. *

Stay Safe.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Michelle Reid
Superintendent

*excused absence if you deem situation unsafe for your student(s). I did this years ago - our neighborhood was treacherous and no way was I gonna put them on a bus.

Ok, cool, glad they are doing an excused absence. Also would hope no new material or extra HW for the kids who can't make it. It would be fair. And parents wanting their kids out of the house so desperately get their way anyway

See, win win. You can keep your kids home while continuing to hurl boring, cliche insults.

I was going to keep them home anyway. I don't need your permission. Enjoy your uninterrupted spa/gym day tomorrow

this is exactly it

Anonymous wrote:The ice near our community is ridiculous. We can barely back out of the driveway without my car losing control and slipping. It’s not just the neighborhood streets either. Once I get onto the main roads leading to my son's local high school in Fairfax County, it’s just as bad. The roads haven’t been properly salted, so there’s this thick, slick layer of ice covering everything. I’ve already seen a couple of cars struggling to make turns and almost hitting the curb. It’s honestly not safe for anyone heading to school or work. Without proper treatment of the roads, we’re risking serious accidents and our kids' lives. Something really needs to be done about this before a child gets hurt.

Now it’s Fairfax’s responsibility to shovel your driveway. Eye roll.
