| I am at a loss of what to do with my daughter's hair.. she has nice, waivy hair but it's parted in the middle- pins up (her hair used to be really curly as a toddler so it was easy to style it in a cute way) .. she could have a different style since her hair is nice but I have no idea if there are hairdressers out there to recommend a hairstyle at this age. Unsure as to part it on a side to look better.. I'm not the most hip mom so I'm hoping for some guidance of a salon or books/magazines for ideas. |
| in another year or two, your DD will be showing and telling you exactly how she wants her hair! |
|
Is her hair thick or thin? How wavy is it? How long is her hair? (really long hair "pulls" some of the curl out due to the weight). The answers to the above questions can help determine what styles will work better for her hair.

DD has thick hair (decent amount like her mom) but it's fine, she still has wispy hair on her upper sides (so pulling it back to both sides with clips, middle hairline now kinda shows this which isn't as flattering). Her hair is shoulder length, wavy to an extent- basically, we lost a method so we brush it out so it stays less wavy. My hair gets frizzy if not brushed so maybe that;s why we do this. No bangs- all same length- easy boring cut when we take her to get her hair cut. thank you for any suggestions!! |
| Have you done a google image search? That might be a good place to start. Sit down with her so you can get an idea of what she does/doesn't like. |
| How much time are you willing to spend maintaining the style in the morning? |
| Search on pinterest - lots of cute kids' haircut ideas there. Based on what you describe, I'd suggest one of these two ideas: (1) cut in a chin length bob and part on side - will be manageable and when she wants she can pull one side back into a bobby pin (there are lots of cute colored ones nowadays), or (2) let is grow to below the shoulders and most days braid it, put it into a ponytail, etc. - the second option is better if you like to braid hair and your daughter likes variety. |
| Are you of a different culture than your child OP? It sounds like a white person asking how to deal with a different culture of hair. Don't cut it too much -- wavy/curly hair looks like a bush/bozo the clown. |
I am white with very curly hair. It happens. |
| I would start with switching to a side part--center parts aren't very flattering on anyone. |
| Like the OP my 7 YO DD has wavy blond hair. I haven't had her hair cut into any specific style as that sounds too grown up for a 7 YO. We keep it longish (just below the shoulders). It is all one length, but we play with "styles". Different braids, pony tails and what not. She enjoys her long hair because she can change it up when she pleases. We cut it short once (just above the shoulders) and that really limited how much she could change her hair so once she grew it out again we keep it just below her shoulders. |
| My DD has very thick wavy hair. It used to be very thick banana curls all over, but sadly it changed. Anway, it's parted on the side with some bangs (she doesn't look good without bangs). It's always either put up with a barrett on one side, a braid or a small pony tail with just the front piece of hair (generally to keep it out of her face). I've also found that chin length is much much better. My DD looks bad with longer hair b/c it's so thick it's weighed down. Plus, it's much easier to comb through when not really long (and we only comb when wet). |

As someone who had thick, wavy hair as a kid (which became incredibly curly as an adult) I recommend against cutting it any shorter than shoulder-length. If her hair is truly that thick, a chin-length bob would result in what a pp referred to as "Bozo hair".
Long layers work best for thick, wavy/curly hair. Sulfate free shampoo and conditioners won't dry hair out like other products will. I like Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum - I use 1 squirt after washing my hair and run it through starting at the bottom and working up. It confrols drizz and helps define some of the curls. Maybe a little curl creme? It's possible her hair is actually more wavy/curly than you think since you brush it out. Once products are in my hair, I don't touch it with a brush. Mine naturally parts slightly to the side. I do have some bangs, but unless you want to manage their upkeep (trims every few weeks, unless you learn to do it yourself), I wouldn't recommend them. Spin pins are good for keeping hair up and they really "lock" it into place. They also have mini ones which would we good for doing a half ponytail. |
wavy hair does not fan out like bozo. Curly, yes, but the OP said her child's hair is wavy. and chin length does not equal a bob cut (believe me I've had many many bob cuts before and they are much shorter than chin length). |
| OP here- thank you for all the suggestions. I'm going to try the side first before cutting any hair.. I am not sure about bangs either (I had them until mid 30s).. I wish a stylist could look at her and suggest the style which would be the most flattering. Middle part is definitely not doing well! Thanks again.. |
