| I have no skin in the game, but I took over a position for someone that was fired. Several months later, that person still lists that they currently hold X position. This is the kind of job where there is only one position in a given area, thus a google search could provide confusing results for clients. WWYD? |
| What can you do? Maybe that person just hasn't logged in and updated his online career info. |
| I agree, likely inactive. I didn't change mine for about 6 months as I completely forgot about it. Now I use LinkedIn a little more often but the first couple years after I signed up I think I logged in maybe twice. |
| They are trying to appear as still at the position and then will explain once they get an interview. |
| Why don't you pretend to be a client or get a friend to do so. Call the former employee and see how s/he responds. |
OP here. Since the person is activitely looking for work and I've seen the wording of the profile change I know it's active. Should also say this person never held the position - ex: Actual position was Assistant to Exec rather than Exec. In other words it's completely inaccurate. Hopefully it's right on a resume otherwise I would imagine you could lose an offer over that kind of 'mistake'. |

Report it to Linked In and see if they take action. They should have a procedure for this scenario.

Thanks PP, did that and hopefully LinkedIn takes care of it. |
Given this further data, it's definitely fraudulent misrepresentation. Not really sure there's anything you can do about it, but when references call to confirm employment the truth will out. They won't be able to say what they were fired for, but definitely able to confirm the job title/position. Not sure what LinkedIn would do about this, may be more of a stink than it's worth. I wouldn't expect many clients would be contacting you via LinkedIn, would they? |
Also, you could just send them a "friendly" note: "I'm the new Client Manager at My Firm and I've been in touch with a few clients who were surprised to hear you were no longer handling their accounts due to your LinkedIn information. Would you be willing to update that to reflect that you're no longer with My Firm so that there's no confusion about whom they should contact in the future? My Boss Who Is The Supervisor Who Fired You and I would really appreciate it. Thank you." |
I had something similar happen to me. I suspect this happens quite a bit. People don't want LinkedIn to reflect any gaps in employment. They don't want to appear to be or have been unemployed for any length of time, because it makes it more difficult to find work. I imagine that sometimes they pull it off by having friendly former coworkers serve as their references and fudge the truth. But other times, it must certainly backfire (as it did for the person who did something similar to me). Just let it play out. Eventually, the person will find a new job somewhere and change the profile or the person will change the current status to something like "consultant." I wouldn't make to big a fuss about it, because you don't want to seem petty or negative. It's best just to let it go. And if someone calls you regarding that person's employment, refer them to your HR person. Never put anything in writing about another employee, even a former employee. |
| I am not active on LinkedIn, but the last time I checked my profile, it still listed me at my last job, although I clearly indicated the end date, so this may also happen inadvertently. (Is there some default setting I need to change to get this fixed?) |
| It's not an issue. If a client wants to work with your firm/company, the other person is a deadened. Google search will turn up your company/firm's info and they will contact you that way, not through LI. |
| OP: We had a lady who was asked to leave her job. It was then vacant for about a year. She kept it on her linked in and we let her b/c she did some piece work for us. When new woman started, she was in control of that old person's contract and just asked her to change it. It was done immediately. |
