I used to work 30 hours per week with a 10 minute commute. My office moved and now I have an hour commute.
Would you expect an adjustment in schedule? I don't mind a pay cut. I had a good thing going with my kids' school schedule but it has been thrown off. I want to say that my total availability in the day has not changed since my children's school time is still the same. |
| I wouldn't expect it (because it sounds kind of entitled), but I would definitely approach my boss to ask for an adjustment in hours in light of the move and longer commuting time. |
+1 I definitely would not "expect" it, as if your employer is supposed to keep track of your schedule and family needs and automatically reduce your working hours upon a tip in the balance. In fact, for people who need all the money they earn during their curent work schedule, automatically reducing hours would NOT work for them. However, if you have been a good employee and you add value to the business, then I think you can approach your boss with a schedule or partial telecommuting proposal, which he/she is then free to approve, decline, or counter-offer. |
| If you are willing and able, I think you can approach your boss and explain that you would like to go to a further reduced schedule. He or she doesn't have to agree to this if their need is for someone to work 30 hours and fewer hours wouldn't work for them. But, if they can accommodate your new schedule and you have been a good employee, you will likely get what you want. If they can't, you can make a decision about keeping the job or looking for a new job that fits your needs better. |
