Snow day

Please explain to me the exact benefit of tomorrow's reduced school day to parents and children. So far nobody said anything meaningful other than vague "it's time to go back". What do you expect will happen to benefit you so much? On the other hand, many already explained to you the challenges they have to face tomorrow to get their kids to school with having to make last minute changes to work schedules (Many won't be able to) and/or deal with alternative school bus stops because their streets have not been plowed or even salted and have turned to ice. Many areas are closed to school buses and also don't have sidewalks.
This should absolutely be an optional day with not extra HW or catch up expectation.

What do those work schedules have to do with anything? There was no sympathy for anybody in this thread for parents who faced work challenges for four days this week.

That's the normal policy for two hour delay days

I’m curious with our moved bus stops - the people at these alternate locations had no idea this would happen. What will the shoveling there even look like!?

I don’t get it either. I’m in Loudoun and I think they should have gone on time yesterday (Thursday!)

Again, stop playing dumb. Some areas had seen plows and salt and people living there assume everything is clear. There are tons of residential area that hadn't seen either and there were even texts/emails issued to parents about alternative bus stops if you don't believe me. Why would they do so had everything been cleared?

Alternative bus stops? So much effort for 5 hours of nonsense 😭

Are you saying alternative location also hadn't been plowed? Residents aren't responsible for plowing the streets for the cars to drive on, that's what our taxes are supposed to pay for.

No school means no sports. Parents get in a twist when facilities are closed

Then stay home. Your choice.

Preach. My feeling exactly. I feel for the drivers and admin and teachers. As a parent I am just going to keep my kids at home instead of jumping through hoops to deal with extra logistics for one day. But they have no choice but to show up for work even if it's only half the kids who would make it.

No shoveling - as in sidewalks. Our usual stops families know they are the bus stop and clear accordingly. This “alternate stop” is not usually a bus stop at all.

Yup. To keep us from doing it. Haha

Teachers aren’t happy about this call.

I’m just surprised. A lot of stress and worry for a short amount of time.

Let's be clear, many of us, Parents aren't happy about this either. Not sure what those who are happy and insisted on this weird one day before the weekend are hoping to gain.

+1. This was such a bad call. What is the point of going to school at 10:30 while the roads are still a mess. My car just skidded on a side street and all the side streets in my neighborhood are a mess. My kids are walkers but there is no way I would be putting my child on a school bus in these conditions. I can’t believe FCPS fell into the pressure of opening up. They should have waited till Monday. The week is pretty much over!

I recognize that it will be some time before every roadway, sidewalk, and bus stop are completely clear,* so please make the decision that is best for your family. *

Stay Safe.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Michelle Reid
Superintendent

*excused absence if you deem situation unsafe for your student(s). I did this years ago - our neighborhood was treacherous and no way was I gonna put them on a bus.

Oh well, too bad for the kids, I guess, hope they have good snow boots.

Finally, a good sensible message.

Ok, cool, glad they are doing an excused absence. Also would hope no new material or extra HW for the kids who can't make it. It would be fair. And parents wanting their kids out of the house so desperately get their way anyway
