are kids your kid's school having babies?

Anonymous
I toured a public elementary school recently and when I asked what high schools the kids went to, the principal mentioned that one girl went to a special high school because she was pregnant/having a baby. My kid's in kindergarten, so I was pretty shocked by this. (pregnant 8th graders ... I can't take it!). Are the kids in your kid's schools having babies??

I find it more interesting that you asked the Principal what High School the students attended and the Principal felt it appropriate to share that one student was at a school for pregnant teenages.

How does this answer your question? Is this not private information?

What rock have you been under? Teenagers have sex; some have abortions, some have the baby. This is nothing new.

Definitely no pregnant girls in our private K-8 school.

But really, you've never heard of high school girls getting pregnant?

OP here. I've definitely seen the stats on teen pregnancy, but 8th grade seems SO young. I'm just wondering how common this is in the everyday. I went to Catholic school growing up and we never had pregnant kids in school. Seriously ... Does that answer what rock I was living under?

What public elementary school has 8th graders?

I'm in Baltimore. We have both k-8 public elementary schools and k-8 charters.

20+ years ago a girl was pregnant in our 9th grade sex ed class. Probably just bling luck she wasn't knocked up in 8th grade. Several more girls were pregnant by graduation. Sure it is only worse now.

Oh well then. Yeah, probably not uncommon to have teen pregnancies in Baltimore.

Baltimore City has a very high rate of teen pregnancy, highest in the state by a good margin. See link with stats by county.

OP again. I'm in Baltimore, but I'm asking because I'm curious how common this is outside Baltimore.

I saw that. The stats are interesting, but that's not really what I'm getting at. To rephrase my initial post: How surprised would you be to hear about a pregnant 8th grader in your kid's school?
