Personal preference. We like the smell and sound of wood but others definitely prefer gas. Either is fine in this climate.

My husband and I disagreed on this. I gave in to gas and am so glad I did. No mess, dont have to buy wood, no wood pile attracting roaches, etc. in back yard, easy to turn on, and now we have 2 kids with athsma. Never looked back!

Gas, for all the reasons PP listed in particular the health reasons. Google the health effects of wood burning - not good

Wood burning in all. I hate gas fireplaces. Especially those horrific ones you can see from two sides (e.g., one way from the master bedroom, and one way from the master bath).

I've had both and never used my wood. Now that I have gas I use it all the time.

Wood burning with a gas starter - best of both worlds.

You need to get one that has adjustable output and has a lot of BTUs.

I have two questions on this topic, please:

1. If your gas fireplace was installed as a unit, which brand would you recommend as being the most realistic looking. (Some look like a fire picture in a TV, which is what I want to avoid).

2. Is the unit vented through a chimney or directly through the back wall? Thanks.
