| Yesterday I was rear ended on my way to work and ended up going to the hospital. Nothing is broken but I'm experiencing a lot of pain in my hip, leg and lower back. I was hoping to rest all weekend and be able to work on Monday, but with how I am feeling today I am not so sure I will be able to work. I work as a nanny for a really wonderful family who has no back up childcare or family in the area. The doctor at hospital told me to take it easy and follow up with my primary before going back to work. I don't know what to do. This isn't a situation where I can just call out for a few days. Would it be reasonable for me to contact them this evening or tomorrow and let them know how I am feeling? I have two weeks worth of PTO- but feel that it should be used with notice such as taking a vacation that's been planned for months. I don't want to lose my job...Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |
If my nanny called with this, I'd probably be slightly skeptical for about a minute, then remember how she never ever calls in - not even when she should - and I'd tell her to take the week and don't even worry about counting it as PTO. I'd figure something out for backup. |
| I would add.... I'd much rather know to tonight than Sunday night.... Gives me more time to plan |
| My bosses already know I was in the accident. I called them before I even called 911 since I was on my way to their house when the accident happened. So far I've worked through the flu, mono and a cold for their family without taking any days off. When I make a commitment, I keep it. Thanks for the feedback. |
| You're following doctor's orders, getting checked out before you go back to work. You don't want to risk injuring yourself further, and you want to be sure you can be safe at your job. I'd rather not have my kid cared for by someone in a lot of pain who was told to go to the doctor and didn't. Let them know asap you won't be in on Monday and go from there. |
| Personally I'd be pissed if you brought MONO and the FLU to my house. Those are really contagious!! |
| My bosses knew I was sick, it was their decision for me to work or not and they were okay with it. That's not what my post was about. I will be contacting them tomorrow morning and letting them know how I'm feeling. At the very least, I want to follow up with my primary. |
If your bosses knew you had the flu and asked you to work anyway your bosses are grade A shitheads |
| This is what PTO is for. Call them now so they can figure out what to do. You sound like a very nice person but don't make their childcare issues your problem. They chose a nanny over a daycare center and this is one of the cons to having a nanny. But it isn't worth it for you to push throw the pain just to make their lives easier. |

PTO is for anything you want. Mental health day, celebrating your cat's birthday, catching up on errands OR Real Housewives marathons, recuperating from car accidents, baking everything you have to bake in your house, whatever.
That's personally why I like to get PTO better than sick days . |
I agree! Working through a cold is one thing, but flu and mono? It actually seems easier to work with the injuries you have now than the flu, so if this is the precedent you have we and wish to keep, then go to work. But you would be completely within your rights to take a day off IMO. |
| I spoke with my bosses. I told them how I'm feeling and that I'd like to follow up with my primary. I am going to go to work and take baby with me to doctor. DB will be out of town all week and I need to be there to support my MB. |
Ugh, sorry OP. If your primary doctor tells you any physical restriction, ask for a doctor's note to provide to your boss. If s/he says "don't lift anything heavy" make them clarify how many pounds. |
I'm currently neither a nanny nor a MB, although I've been both in the past. PTO is for anything you want, but it's also a very reasonable expectation that employees will give adequate notice for PTO when it's not an emergency. Where I work we ask for 2 weeks notice if it's not an emergency. If you're sick, your child's sick, your grandma fell down and broke her hip and you need to be there to support her, your car broke on the way to work, absolutely you can call me the day of. I'm sure there are other things too, but if you call me in the a.m. and tell me you'll be out because you need to make cucumber sandwiches for tonight's book club and you want them to be fresh (yes, I had someone do this), or because you have jury duty and forgot to tell me, then I will be angry, and it will be reflected in your review. |
Jesus. Please find a new job. Your bosses are MONSTER assholes. I'd never ever ever in a million fucking years ask my nanny to do this. How much are you paid? It better be a metric shitton to put up with this. |
