Furlough and Leave

If Furloughed can you use your accrued leave? Private or federal difference?

If a federal employee is furloughed, that means they are off work without pay. Accrued leave is what you use when you are off work with pay.

You can't use accrued leave to get paid during a furlough-- that misses the whole point of the exercise (to the extent there is any).

no you can't use leave because that is paid time. they are looking to lower costs by not paying.

No. When you are furloughed, you are not actively employed. You are in a suspended employment state and therefore are not eligible to use accrued leave. You can only use accrued leave, sick leave, etc when you are in an active employment state.

It doesn't apply to me, but I wonder what happens to employees who are on some form of leave already are furloughed. For example, someone who is currently out on FMLA leave. Does the furloughed time count against their FMLA leave of 12 weeks? If a person is on short or long-term disability and their position is furloughed, does that mean that they stop getting disability benefits?
