My 17 month old is taking augmentin. I am also giving him yogurt. Is there anything else I can give him to help with the watery stools? Anything I should avoid?
Call your doctor.
My son was on this medicine twice (about 10m and 13m, both for ear inf.) and got pretty bad diarrhea towards the end of the 10 day dose both times. We did the yogurt, lots of cheese, etc, but it didn't help. I've heard that acidophilis (sp?) is helpful, but am unsure of the doses. The next time the ped. tried to prescribe it, I asked for an alternative.
Why? The doctor gave me the meds. I read the meds info. I am asking moms who have used augmentin for 1st hand advice. |
DS just finished a course of augmentin, and made it through with no diarrhea. He's 10 months, and eats Happy Bellies baby cereal, which has probiotics in it, and I feel like that's what helped him avoid the stomach problems commonly associated with augmentin. If you'd rather not go back to baby cereal for your son, you might ask your doc about how to dose the acidopholous caplets you can get in the refrigerated vitamin section at Whole Foods. Good luck!
there is also probiotics specifically for infants and kids called florababy. I don't have experience with augmentin but just wanted to post about the probiotics in case you wanted to go that route.
I don't remember what the medication was, but the antibiotic DS took for his ear infection gave him awful watery stools the whole time. I tried yogurt and probiotics (Culturelle), but it didn't seem to help much. Also try the BRAT diet - we started giving DS rice cereal again during this time and that seemed to help a bit.
Thank you for the suggestions. DS's stool is water. His poor butt is red. I have been giving him YoBaby but I will head to Whole Foods today for some stronger probitocs. I think I also need to get some rice in him. He did eat some pasta yesterday.
I'm not sure where you are located by Knowles Apothecary carries the FloraBaby probiotics.
Lots of bananas!
Has anyone had their baby on augmentin before they were eating solids? My DD hasn't started them yet so I don't know how I can get her to have probiotics since she rarely has a bottle. She has been on it for 6 days for a bad ear infection and her stomach is upset but no poop issues yet. Her appetite is way down and it really worries me. On the plus side, I think her ear has resolved. Has this happened to others? Any creative ideas on how to get her to take probiotics?
We bought a pro-biotic product at Whole Foods. It cleared up DS's tummy in a day. I want to say it was refrigerated and called Flora Baby.
We've had a lot of success w/ kefir. Kefir is very much like yogurt, but has tons more "healthy bacteria." Whole Foods sells kefir for kids called Pro Bugs. It tastes like a yogurt smoothie-- my DD loves it!
I gave my DS acidophilus before he was on solids. I bought capsules filled with acidophilus powder. Every day I'd open one and mix the powder with a bit of water (you could also use expressed BM or formula) to make a paste. I'd then use my finger to put the paste in his mouth. It seemed to work OK. |
The PP who suggested calling your pediatrician wasn't necessarily wrong. They would know how to combat watery stools and in fact may know if the dose is perhaps too much. With my first child, I always called my pediatrician first. With number 2, I usually follow the advice I received the first time around, and if that doesn't work, I call the pediatrician. |
