My 8 year old really likes the Wild Kratt/Zoboomafoo series but has seen them all. Can anyone recommend similar TV show that's aimed at slightly older kids?
OP, here, I did search Common Sense Media but came up empty.
There are lots of nature shows that you can watch on Netflix. I think after these, they are just regular adult shows.
My 6 y/o daughter LOVES Survivorman! (not quite the same) I screened a few episodes before letting her watch and was surprised that it wasn't at all gory. He did skin a rabbit in one epidode but they only showed the before and after (not the actual process). He takes a camera and 'strands' himself in different situations. The Sahara desert, jungle, a life raft in the ocean, the list goes on. Very entertaining and educational. Now my 6 y/o can tell you what to do if you survive a plane crash with only a book of matches and a plastic bag. We only watch on netflix so she doesn't see questionable commercials. He eats bugs, purifies his own water and digs for clams. Very cool!
My son is a huge animal and nature nut. Not quite as old as yours, but in addition to everything Wild Kratt, he loves Jeff Corwin videos. I don't know if he's got a show on anywhere. Animal Planet maybe? I've purchased the videos.
We have Wild Kratts and creature fans in our house as well (ages 7 and 5). They loved the Planet Earth and Frozen Planet series (extra bonus, so did the adults). We also watch Jack Hanna and Jeff Corwin on ABC on Saturday mornings, which beats the cartoon network. There is another totally cheesy show on Animal Planet, something like the Turtle Man or something similar about this redneck guy that goes around and captures wild animals that get into people's houses, yards, golf courses, whatever. I hate this show personally, but the kids love him and find him hilarious.
We've been watching Blue Planet and Planet Earth for a while now. My kids think it's special because I'll sit down with them, and we'll dim the lights and pretend we're in a theater.
Thanks, I'm also the parent of a Wild Kratts fan who has seen them all. He is increasingly dabbling in non-animalish shows on Cartoon Network, most of which aren't horrendous but have a bit too much attitude for me (and esp when aped by his younger brother.) Jonny Test, Adventure Time, and the like. They seem to make both boys act horribly. I will try Jeff Corwin and hunt on Animal Planet. Anything ha

my 6 year old daughter liked the "Octonauts" on Netflix. I watched a few with her, and it was pretty good. Magic school bus was alright as well (even if a bit dated).

My 8yo went through a Wild Kratts phase and is now obsessed with Odd Squad.
Meerkat Manor. My kids loved that show. Another not so animal friendly show is Fetch with Ruff Ruffman. My kids were obsessed with this show from 8-10yrs old. So much fun!
Nat Geo Kids.
Treehouse master
Jarod Miller animal shows are good. |
My kids also like Odd Squad -- I don't think it's nearly as good as Wild Kratts. Ruff Ruffman is, however, really pretty good -- the kids do a ton of interesting things. My animal nut still watches the Wild Kratts reruns but also is really digging Planet Earth.
