Anyone get itchy red bumps/rash on belly after csection? Am worried!

Anonymous
I had my third csection 5 days ago and yesterday I started getting itching on my stomach - above my incision. It comes and goes but tonight its so itching and is red and bumpy. I started to get worries so called on call OB and said its probably just a reaction but couldn't figured out what. I'm only taking Motrin and Tylenol 3 and have taken those plenty with no reactions. Could it be hormonal? She didn't mentio that. I'm now worried its more serious but she said if it was an infection than a fever would be present (which it isn't). She recommended hydrocortisone cream and benedryl. I'm still concerned its more serious. Anyone experience this post csection? Help!!

Could it be PUPPP?

If you are breastfeeding you might want to skip the benadryl. I had some itching and numbness

I got a rash after a c-section the day after. It was a circular area that matched roughly where he put some adhesive sheeting over my abdomen before cutting me open. I must have been allergic to the adhesive or the sheeting?

PUPP usually disappears upon birth. Did you have adhesives around there, maybe you're allergic to that?

Sounds like you're allergic to the tape/adhesive. I had the same thing. I went to my OB totally terrified that I had an infection and he said it was no big deal. It went away on its own after a few days.

I'm allergic to adhesive and after the first C-section (I had 3) I made sure to tell the Drs. that. The itch was horrible and lasted about 10 days. I treated it with lots of hydrocortisone cream and benedryl cream.

OP here - thanks for replies. It unfortunately is above where the adhesive would have been ... but probably where the stuff they use to clean the skin. Although strange b/c I've had three csections and this is the only time I've experienced this. I tried hydrocortizone cream and did benedryl last night, but no relief. Its not getting worse, but not getting better. I'm wondering if it might be something to do w/ hormonal sweating (at night) and having those hospital undies on top. It showed up 3 days post csection so I can't imagine it was the spinal block drugs. OB on call last night was less than helpful. Regular OB not in until Tuesday. I am scared it's an infection but my incision site looks perfect normal and actually the bumps aren't even really around that area -- more above it.

I had something horrendously similar but worse...they think it was allergic reaction to iodine used in surgery...gone in 5 days but was terrifying. I took claritin. Impt to determine your internal stitches are ok. Good luck!!

I had an allergic reaction to the material that post-partum underwear is made of, which looked like what you described. It went away soon after I stopped using the underwear.

Okay I had this and it was ringworm. And don't freak bc it's not a work but a yeast infection. If it is at all circular and won't go away it might be ringworm. try an over the counter anti fungal cream if you think that's what you have. Worked for me. Also I had an itching reaction to the pain meds and the adhesive...fun. But you said it's above the adhesive marks and I assume you've taken The same pain meds in the past.

That's supposed to say "not a worm".

I had my ENTIRE belly and legs with an itchy, horrible rash that stumped about 6 doctors. It took 10 days to go away and itched like hell...and even worse than the itches you get coming out of the anesthetic. It turns out they had this new cleansing wash that they had just started using and I was horribly allergic- I was the first time they'd seen anything. I now know to ask for the old school iodine.

I suggest taking a picture, and using benedryl.

I had a nasty bumpy itchy red rash that started on belly then went all down my bum& legs to my toes. But nothing on my upper body. Dr said it was allergy to histamine injection that makes epidural spread around your abdomen before c section. I have hay fever so histamine is the worst thing to give me. Another dr said it was puppp rash due to hormone imbalance. Rash lasted 5 weeks and nothing helped relieve it. Only good news is its not dangerous and went away by itself

A rash after a Cesarean section may result from your anesthesiologist adding narcotics to your epidural or spinal. Allergies from opioids, such as morphine are common.
