I just started Wellbutrin and am on the pill, so my periods are very regular and quite light (I am 43). This month is the first month on Wellbutrin and I am hemorrhaging (not literally, but you know what I mean). Not to be too graphic, but we are talking about going through a super tampon every 20 minutes all day. It's making me crazy and I feel totally wiped out and shaky from it. Doesn't help my husband is gone on business travel out of the country for a month.
Anyway, just wondering if others have experienced similar and I will call my Dr. this morning. Thanks for any insights. |
| I was not on hormonal BC when I was taking Wellbutrin, but I saw no such effects. |
|
No such side effects for me, and the first year I was on it I wasn't on hormonal birth control. Periods were regular in timing and flow.
Are you doing okay, OP? With flow that heavy, I'd be thinking about heading into the ER rather than waiting to hear from the doc, especially since you're feeling tired and shaky. Take care. |
| Thanks. I guess it's a known potential side effect. Was over today or my dr said I should come in. Still quite wiped our from it. It may lessen as body gets used to the drug. One day , if I know it's coming, I am handle. I am hopeful that wellbutrin will work out for me. Thanks for pp feedback. |
| 10:49 here: glad to hear you're okay, OP. I'd have been really freaked, too. There's so much individual variability in response to medications. Wellbutrin worked wonderfully for me, but if it's not the med for you there are others. All the best. |
| Make sure you're not anemic. |

I’ve been on WB for two months. My periods before WB were 3 weeks apart and lasted 4 days, Light, didn’t need tampons. My period was 1 week late the first month on WB and lasted 5 days. Second month it was also 4 weeks apart instead of 3, but it lasted 9 days and I’m on 6 days of spotting after the period seemed to end. I see my dr next week for a follow up.
I have also had intense back pain. Unbearable. Not sure it’s related. Pain is in the same region of my back as my reproductive organs so I’m going to talk to my dr about that as well. I feel it is all connected to the WB and hope it stops soon. |
| I am experiencing very heavy menstrual flow I am on 300 mg Wellbutrin for about 4 weeks |
| I’ve been on and off it three times and never experienced this. Does sound like you should see your doc tho. |

I’m 37 and take Wellbutrin and have never had this. I have a Mirena IUD. I do sometimes feel crampy since taking the Wellbutrin but haven’t had bleeding.
I vary between a 75 mg dose and a 150 mg. I’m so sorry you’re going through this!! I love my Wellbutrin and would be sad to have to give it up. I’m sorry you’re having this horrible side effect. |
| Hi I'm 33 and have been on wellbutrin for around 8 months, 300mg xl. I started spotting a lot and more recently in the past few months I have been experiencing seemingly random intense bleeding and passing huge clots. Currently I have been on my period for a week and it seems non stop. Most of the time I'm busting through super, super plus and now ultra tampons fairly quickly, usually under the hour or less. I have been on bc on and off since 19 due to cysts. I have had heavy periods in the past but nothing like this. I do feel like it's the wellbutrin but everyone tells me that I should see my PCP. I was also on Lexapro but stopped that due to drowsiness and a lot of really watery discharge. When I stopped the Lexapro so did the weird discharge. I'm starting to think that psychotropic meds don't like my uterus lol |
| No I never had this and was on 100 mg of Wellbutrin. My periods were super light. |
| Sorry this is happening, OP! Consider looking for other possible causes, correlation =/= causation. And speaking of causation, I can’t think of any biological reason Wellbutrin would cause hormonal or uterine changes. |
| I’ve been taking Wellbutrin 300xl for 7 years. I’m now 43 and dealing with Fibroids and heavy bleeding. My testosterone and DHEA have been elevated for about the same time I’ve been on Wellbutrin and I was diagnosed PCOS. (I don’t have PCOS) My GYN took me off of WB 6 weeks ago and I just completed a normal cycle for the first time. (5 days and no bathroom murder scene bleeding). I will have my DHEA levels checked again soon. It absolutely can mess with sex hormones and a combination pill of Wellbutrin and trazadone has stage 3 clinical trials going as a treatment for low libido in women. I was on both medications. Trazadone 50mg for sleep - 5 years. Wellbutrin is also used in teen boys for ADHD treatments because it does not surprise DHEA like the stimulate medications do. WB is a close cousin of those ADHD stimulant meds. Good luck ladies. |
