Hello-
Over the weekend, I got a service done by triple A, and it came to $117. I looked at my online banking, and they took out $150. A few lines later, there's a transaction from triple A, labeled a 'reversal', for "-$33". Similarly, I used an ATM at a convenience store and tried to take out $180. It ran out of money, dispensed me $40, and a message came up saying my account would be credited the $140. So, I looked at my online banking, and there's the $180 charge, then a few lines later, a reversal for "-$140". My question is, shouldn't the reversal amount NOT have a negative sign in front of the amount? I don't think this has ever happened to my account before, and it's kind of a coincidence there's 2 instances of it now. They are still labeled 'processing.' Even if the reversal transaction disappears once it clears, I still need that amount credited - So, as of now, my account is minus the incorrect amount as well as the amount that should've been ADDED to my account (in both cases). Of course by habit I threw away the receipt after I went to the ATM but I do still have my AAA receipt. Has this ever happened to anyone? I have BOA fwiw. |
I wouldn't worry about it. Banks display the information in different ways, and what you are seeing is just the way they choose to format it for the website. My bank would have labeled it as a ($180) ATM transaction in red followed by a $140 ATM transaction in black to indicate that it was actually a credit to the account. The labels are for your benefit, not for the computer, which only cares about the actual amount of the transaction. |
Sounds like the net is correct in each transaction. The credit just needs to have the reverse sign of the debit. Just think about it in addition term. (180) + (-140) = 40. |
OP here. Thank you PP's for the knowledge. Everything processed/cleared correctly as of this morning. I was just paranoid because it's a tight month for me financially! |
