| I'm having frequent hot flashes and night sweats, and recently tried a black cohosh supplement which claims to help. After three weeks, I'm still having the hot flashes, but I've also gained 5 pounds! I exercise regularly and haven't changed my eating habits, so I did some internet research and found that black cohosh can sometimes cause weight gain. Has anyone had any similar experience with this supplement? |
| Haven't used the supplement, but found eating less meat helped with hot flashes. I don't know if there is any scientific basis, but I didn't care. |
| I'll be 50 soon. I've been crazy hot at night (not flashes but a constant "oh my god it's so hot in here" hot) for about 6 months. For the past 3 weeks I've been feeling hot during the day and started taking my temperature and it ranges from 98.6-100 degrees, averaging about 99.6 every day. Otherwise I feel like I usually do. So, is this garden variety menopause? Anything I could/should be doing? Thanks! |
| Has anyone noticed a connection between alcohol and hot flashes? Mine have been terrible for a few months now. Normally, I have a glass of wine every night with dinner. Last week, I skipped a night and noticed that I was no longer having the hot flashes. Since then, no wine and no hot flashes! I am thrilled, so I wanted to share this in case it can help someone else. |
| I take the One A Day vitamin for menopause, it seems to help a little with the hot flashes, I have them all the time for at least 2 years. Some days are worse than others. I also noticed that caffeine makes them worse. Sadly, I can't give up the coffee since I am so tired from the night sweats, since I can never fall back asleep after they wake me up! |
| Alcohol does increase my hot flashes so I only have a glass a wine once a week now. Also started wearing wicking pajamas which have helped me sleep better when I get a hot flash at night. The pjs keep me much cooler and drier so I don't wake up so many times. |
|
Where would one find wicking pjs? (I'm reminded of the long underwear I wear under ski clothes, which of course is crazy hot).
And anyone have an answer to the question whether your body temperature actually rises during menopause? Whether having a "fever" for an extended period of time is normal? |
I don't have any idea about pjs but I wear a short sleeves wicking workout shirt to bed. It's very helpful. |
Yes. Bummer, isn't it? It also helped to turn the temp down to 60 every night (gave my husband and extra blanket and the temp doesn't drop until he's asleep. |
| I used to get a lot, but they've stopped, mostly. I definitely noticed the meat connection. Don't know why, but if I don't eat meat or eggs, the hot flashes stop. I don't drink, but I've had loads of hot flashes, so alcohol can't be causing them! |
DP here. Wow, that's great. Unfortunately I don't drink. Maybe I should start and then quit!

| I'm 51 and have been getting hot flashes during the night off and on for a few years. It seems to be worse at the end of my period, so I assume it has something to do with changing hormone levels at that time. Wine definitely makes it worse, and I've also noticed the connection with meat consumption. |
| I've been getting night sweats since I was 39 but only on nights when I have alcohol. The doctor said they are definitely menopause-related. I find that taking zyrtec at least an hour before I have alcohol, and skipping the wine entirely (vodka tonic anyone?), does seem to help. No idea why. |

Welcome to perimenopause and menopause there are many symptoms like:
hot flashes, night sweats, foggy memory, hair loss, dry skin, no sleep, weight gain, bone fracture, very sensitive, bloated, nails break, dry skin, bones break, loss of sex, and much more but if we are happy at home and work and love our selves and eat healthier, and exercise, and try to sleep earlier, and be positive all these symptoms wont hit us so hard, it is a difficult time I cry a lot, and have a lot of these symptoms but try to be positive, take vitamins, love my job and family to feel less miserable |
| Interesting about the meat connection. Ive been having hot flushes for last 3 years. Im 50 this year. have tried HRT but left me still not getting much sleep and suffering from depression. I was so emotional low I took myself of it. I am now back to trying alternative things like soya supplements evening primrose, sage but not much joy awake most of the night having sweats and hot flushes. I going out tomorrow to get some Zirtek tomorrow, worth a try. |
