What would you do if you were us? Alexandria schools related

Anonymous
We currently live in Alexandria with 2 young children. We love our house, neighborhood, lifestyle and short commutes to work but do not like our public school options. We have 2 young children and may have a third in a year or so. We were originally planning to send our children to private school. The schools we like are ~$25k/student. When you add in fees, aftercare, summer camp and extras, I estimate it to be more like $35k/student per year. I calculate that if we applied each child's annual tuition towards a mortgage, we could get $600k more house. Our current home is worth about $1 million. If we applied private school tuition for 2-3 kids towards mortgage, we could get a $2-3 million home elsewhere. We have a HHI of $700k.

What would you do if you were us?
A. Move to a $2+ million home in McLean or Arlington where you can have excellent public schools and short commutes to work
B. Stay in Alexandria and go the private school route.

Our original plan was to do private school for the short-term and then move when the kids are a little older. Now I think it may be better to bite the bullet now and just move before the kids start elementary school. I moved around a few times when I was a child and hated leaving all my friends.

You have posted about 7 different threads asking the same question in different ways. I answered one of your other ones.

If I were you I would leave and take my kids elsewhere ASAP. And I would sell my house to a family who isn't as snobby as me. And I would convince all my snobby friends to do the same.

PLEASE follow my advice.

We were you and chose Option A and bought in N. Arlington. I think most people in our positions do that.

Having qualms about ACPS isn't being snobby. It's being realistic.

If you're assuming that ACPS simply isn't of any value at all, you're mistaken. Your current posts will invite numerous criticisms, but a review of these boards will disclose numerous ACPS fans who offer reasoned and strongly favorable opinions.

If my income was $700,000, I would move to McLean, buy a condo at Vail, and also send my kids to private school. Win-win-win.

Wow, if your income is 700k you should live in a cheaper house and have the luxury of choosing the private school of your dreams.

You mean, you'll discover a handful of boosters. Not "numerous" fans. And they tend to be very ... passionate in their defenses and rationalization, not espeically reasoned. Many of them simply don't know any better, not having experienced a better system.
