S/O - What’s up with AEM?

Black crime victim pictured somehow equates to Willie Horton? I think this is the head-on collision at the intersectionality.

For those of us on this thread, if you are (like me) a Democrat and anti-Trump generally, I think this experience should give us all pause about the assumptions we make and the language we use when discussing the opposition/Republicans. Everyone is upset here because we are all largely Dems and don't expect (or deserve) this kind of vitriol simply for choosing the less progressive of two Democratic candidates. But, many in my circle seem to think it's okay to dish this kind of stuff out so long as the target is not a fellow Dem but a relative, a neighbor, an acquaintance who votes Republican or even voted for Trump. Sorry for the Pollyanna-ish turn, but I kinda hope everyone will think about that, say, the next time you hear "the cruelty is the point" or similar said about people who fundamentally have nothing more than a political disagreement.

To me this just shows how Dems are bound to lose in 2020. Ad hominem attacks for voting for the moderate Dem, foaming at the mouth posts about social justice. Holy moly. Get over yourselves. You know what I care about? Safety for my family and kids where I can go about my life without fear. A good public education where the school isn't ruled by underage criminals. Commonsense gun rules (no, not a ban). Clean water to drink, and action to address environmental issues that will haunt the next generation. Dems are just alienating moderate voters with their my way or the highway attitude.

I too am a Parisa supporter but I hate what’s going on on AEM. Please remember these few people taking over the posts are not endorsed by Parisa and are certainly doing her no favors. I certainly understand why they have turned people off

Judging by the crowd at my polling place this morning, the race will be determined by senior citizens. Not sure in whose favor that would be.

Wow, the race even made Politico:

At the risk of getting burned by identity politics, how does some one "identify" as a woman of color?

That is an interesting contrast to "Stamos, 61, who is white". I wonder why they chose those words instead of just saying she is a woman of color.

+1000 thank you. I’ve been a Dem thus far in my life, sometimes begrudgingly, but boy do people need to get it together.

Pretty much all races in Arlington, including for the school board, county board, etc. are determined by senior citizens. The bigger races are determined by senior citizens and young people who don’t have children. As much as we like to live in our own AEM-centric world and think APS parents have sway, they are not the majority in Arlington by any means. Quite the opposite.

I assume there are Iranian Americans who just call themselves "white"? I mean, she could pass.

I had an Iranian friend who told me technically Iranians/Persians are white. He said he couldn’t claim any other ethnicity on his college apps. Don’t know is it’s true, but could explain the “identify” versus “is” language.

Of course they are Caucasian. Part of Iran is in the Caucasus region.

Just seemed a little unfair considering the discrimination my friend would face often. I don’t think he viewed himself as “white,” and a lot of white people didn’t either.

I like how the article let readers know that it is Tafti, not the writer, calling her a “person of color.”

Agree completely. Which school is ruled by underage criminals? WMS?
