Hahahhaha WHAT?! no. Takoma Park (MD) is my suggestion. Others have suggested Columbia heights, Logan, shaw. There are aspects that you might like but these places also have crap school, are increasingly expensive & have enough random street violence that it makes me nervous. We live in one of these areas and our street regularly (like daily / weekly) has cars broken into (& 2 stolen off our street), mail packages stolen off doorsteps (a street of row houses), and robberies/muggings. |
gaithersburg is not Potomac despite what your real estate agent told you |
The many families who pay $700k and up for houses in Silver Spring prove that PP is wrong. There are many people who choose SS over Bethesda at those prices. |
|
H Street Corridor, Shaw, or Bloomingdale are closest to what you're looking for. These are "up and coming" ish neighborhoods with some funky aspects and rowhomes that may have parking and outdoor space. They all have metro or bus->metro access.
You could also look at Hyattesville/Mt Rainier in MD which will be a bit less pricey. |
Ha ha ha! When it works, which is not often, and isn't on fire, which is happening more and more. |
| People, this thread is from 2013. I'm sure OP has found somewhere to live by now. |
|
H Street sounds like what you are looking for. You will find great coffee shops, restaurant. You can rent a row house with parking and outdoor space at around $3000/month.
Biker's paradise! |

| Cathedral Commons in DC definitely has a modern, hip vibe. |
You're delusional, yes a small handful of homes sell for 700k in silver spring in the like 2 best neighborhoods which is the entry point for the more modest Bethesda homes but if you think SS is close to that level your just crazy, there is about a 450k difference (over double) price difference in the median value indexs. Yes the home prices are a little higher closer to DTSS but the prices are a lot higher closer to Downrown Bethesda too. Even conceding your point that there is a small handful in silver spring that could afford it they boil down to a very small group that decided that they didn't want to spend all of their money on an entry level home when they could top of the pile in a lesser area. Doesn't sound noble to me. http://www.zillow.com/bethesda-md/home-values/ http://www.zillow.com/silver-spring-md/home-values/ |
+1 we live in this neighborhood and the hipsters drive me nuts. come on over. you will love it. plus, it way more diverse than most of the other areas suggested. |

The neighborhoods you are looking for are:
- Petworth - H Street - Brookland - Mt. Rainier - Hyattsville |
I'm not the PP, but your snide reply nicely illustrates why we didn't want to live in Bethesda. We did look, at a few houses, but it just felt crazy to spend nearly a million on places that were depressingly small and out of date. We're a family of three and will likely go private for middle and high school so it makes no sense for us to spend excessively on housing, especially if it means living near people like you. Who gives a shit about meeting your definition of noble? |
Yeah sorry I just don't believe people like you. That's like someone saying they could afford Georgetown but choose to live in Trinidad. Sure there are 10 nice houses on Sligo, but the rest of SS is bland and ugly, plain and simple. I've lived in this are for 15 years and I've frequented neighborhoods in Wheaton, Beltsville, and Takoma park for good food. Silver spring has no redeeming qualities. And DTSS is pretty ghetto, like Chinatown. Oh and ps I don't live in Bethesda. I'm not bashing SS for the sake of bashing it. I just think it sucks. |
