Child having a very difficult time deciding between an academically excellent but more balanced school that is very "fun" and a single gender school known to be more intense. Ultimately, we said that as parents we are making the choice and we think that you will grow and develop more in a structured environment. All of DC's observations were valid and thoughtful, just missing the perspective of time that we parents have.

I would always respect the child.

There’s a difference between forcing a kid into a school they don’t want to go to and making the final decision when the kid is on the fence. I wouldn’t send a kid to a school they were clear they didn’t want but if the kid is hemming and hawing and having trouble choosing I think it’s reasonable for the parents to just choose. Maybe the kid is showing they’re not ready to be responsible for that decision, and that’s ok

Worried about this now. We're going from a 7 minute commute to 30+ minutes. DS is going to have to learn to roll out of bed earlier.

Oof. That’s going to be a rough transition. We had a 30-45 min commute for DC from PK through 4th, before much homework or afterschool activities, and it was bad. Plus if there was a crash or anything major on one of the highways, it could take a hour. Commute became an important factor for the next two school decisions. Now at 15-20 min for HS and it’s very nice.

Commute should absolutely be a factor. It’s not just school (people always say there’s a bus). There’s parent events, extracurriculars and where the majority of the other kids live to factor in as well.

Absolutely factored this in.

Amazing great athletic smart kid with great test scores and grades, waitlisted at all of his 8th grade applications. We got great feedback from each school and are being encouraged to stay in touch and apply again on a really entry year which we plan to do. But still heartbroken for our great son.

Are there still calls made about the waitlist from schools over spring break?

Keep in mind that probably half or more of posts on DCUM are trolls or teenagers. Just ignore comments like this

Somehow only 20-30 got into Sidwell yet there are at least 50 people on this thread and forum claiming to have gotten in.

Yep, too many "greats" aren't so great in an application. Should ask Claude to improve the diversity of word use.

This was us a couple of years ago when our 7th grade son applied to schools for 8th grade. We expected it, since it wasn't an entry year, and were planning to just chalk it up to experience, but then he eventually got in off a wait list.
