Really dark hair and greys

Anonymous
I have very dark hair. Almost black, like Monica Belluci (paler skin). I am also getting lots of greys. I prefer my hair dark, but those shiny grey hairs come back within a month or less. Do I have to start going lighter? Highlights? What are the best ways to cover. I hate grey roots.

I have very dark hair too. Get my hair colored every 4 weeks. Going lighter wont help because your hair is so dark. You'd have to lift your color quite a bit so as to notice the whites...which is very expensive, time consuming and damaging.

I say bite the bullet, start getting your roots touched up and stay close to your natural color

This is me, too. I prefer my hair to be very dark, like yours, but my hairdresser talked me into going a few shades lighter with subtle highlights. I still have to get touch-ups at least every 4 weeks, but those grays that don't take the color well don't stick out as much. It's a compromise I'm willing to live with because I don't think I'd be one of those beautiful 40 year old gray foxes.

I head to the salon every four weeks and I use those little markers/crayons from ULTA to cover my gray roots when they come in. Works well for me and I am Eastern European with pale skin and dark hair.

Do you have a link to the ULTA markers?

OP here. I'll dye my hair into my 90's if I live that long.

Leave it alone. Grey is fine.

Sorry. I just don't agree. I wear make up everyday too. I even like to make sure my pajamas match and look cute. Maybe I'm high maintanence. That's ok. It brings me joy. I'm also a published scientist in two subjects (more than two publications just to clarify). I feel like I've worked hard enough to grant myself these guilty pleasures without feeling like being superficial is the only part of my personality.

OP, I am like you. Naturally dark hair like Alyssa Milano/Monica Belucci/Salma Hayek. (I wish I look like any of those women but I digress).

I was going dark brown and doing it at home every time. I did go to a more medium brown (Level 5 brown, according to my salon, which still shows pretty dark) on my hair. I have a fair but olive complexion.

my hair grows fast too, so greys show up in 4 weeks. What I do is, color it every 8 weeks along with a haircut at a salon, but do Clariol root touch up at the top and the temples for less than $10 at home. So I go salon, at home, salon, at home, evrey 4 weeks, to balance out the cost with the quality.

I was coloring it myself every time at home, but my hair is shoulder-length so it was getting hard to do the back and it was looking two-toned. I don't have the money or the time to go to the salon every 4 weeks though.

Also you probably have as many grey hairs as blonds/lighter haired people, there just isn't as much contrast with other people.

I am with others who said I will dye my hair until i'm 90. Also I'm almost 40 and got carded last night, and I feel and look about 5 years younger than I am. Can't say I would feel or look the same with grey hair. My DH has not gotten carded since he was 28 because he has a babyface but is all grey now. Just do it.

Black hair, pale skin blue eyes...I'm the color of Megan Fox.

I started to grey in my late 20s. I dye my hair every 4 weeks.

I also started to gray in my 20's. I now have my hair dyed every three weeks. That seems to be just right. I'll color my hair as long as I can but I'll probably go lighter when my colorist recommends it. Dark hair and dark eyebrows look funny on the elderly. I've even persuaded my DH to start coloring his hair. All it took was two people calling him "Ma'am" (he has curly hair).

I am the same coloring, but I do not look like Megan Fox I sometimes get compared to Rachel Weiz so you know what I look like.

Anyway, my hair started going grey in my early teens and now, at 33, I have to dye it every few weeks. I dye it at home and leave it on for 40 minutes. Highlights don't help much. I've had them before. That helps people with blonde hair more.
