Please help me come up with a list of which schools have Mandarin programs and what grade they begin WIS starts at 6th. Maret starts at 6th? Earlier? GDS at 6th or 7th? Sidwell at 4th? Others? What about the girls schools? I realize I can research this but if you know and are willing to help, thank you. |
| Holton Arms starts at 6th grade. |
| Landon starts at 6th |
|
Flint Hill starts at 7th
SSSAS starts at 9th, I believe |
| I think Norwood (a K-8) has it ... or at least they used to. |
Starts in 5th. |
| It's not private, but Yu Ying is Mandarin immersion K-8. |
Sidwell starts in 7th http://www.sidwell.edu/upper-school/chinese-studies/chinese-language/index.aspx |
| It looks like GDS may start at third. Anyone have experience with that? |
| Yes GDS has Chinese as an optional language in 3rd grade. The other choices are French or Spanish. |
I too recall reading somewhere that Sidwell Chinese study begins in 4th grade. Not sure where, and I think it's a fairly new program, so not sure if it's reflected on the website. If you're interested in Chinese study that young, it's worth asking the admissions people about it. |
I just found this http://www.sidwell.edu/upper-school/chinese-studies/chinese-history/index.aspx
I have no idea how intensive that 4th grade study is, but it doesn't sound like a full-scale language course, FWIW. |
| Beauvoir have after school language program (2 classes per week) for Mandarin, French, Spanish from prek to 3rd grade. |
| I am pretty sure that there is nothing younger than third grade except for the mandarin immersion in the public school programs but happy to be corrected if this is wrong. |
| And excepting the after school programs at Beavoir and WIS and maybe others. |
