| We have a galley kitchen with a very old wall oven. I'm considering replacing the wall oven with a freestanding range. (The advantage of putting in the freestanding range is that I'd get more counterspace where the wall oven currently is and I'd also get a wider oven -- 30 " vs. the 24" wall oven.) But I'm wondering if I'll have enough room to open the wall oven door comfortably. For others who have galley kitchens and freestanding ovens, do you have enough room to open the oven door? How much space do you have in front of your oven? |
| Yes, we have enough room. There's not a lot of room for someone else to walk behind you when the oven is open, but it's not like you keep that oven door open for long periods of time. It should be fine. |
Op here. Thanks for the reply. Do you know about how much walking space you have in front of the oven? (I know, probably not something you know offhand...) We have 39" inches of floor space in front of where the oven would be. |
| I don't know exactly but it's a standard galley kitchen width, I think. 39" sounds about right. I can stand behind the open door to get things in and out but that's about it. |

Do you have a dishwasher? Does that door open fully?
Go to Sears or somewhere else and bring a tape measure. Open a range oven door and measure how far it comes out. I think you should be fine, but if you're nervous, go double check it. You will likely have little walking space in front of the oven when it's open, but how long does anyone leave an oven door open and fully extended? |
| I have a narrow galley and a gas range, and I don't have any problems opening the oven door. Bear in mind that you need to measure from counter to counter as the countertop usually extends an inch or two beyond the actual cabinet. AJ Madison website has a lot of specs on each of the items it carries, I use that when trying to estimate dimensions. But unless your walkway is less than 30 inches, I can't imagine you'd have a problem. However I will admit that I'm trying to move mine because it feels like a safety issue - my galley is open at either end to other rooms, and I hate having to watch for oncoming traffic every time I want to open the oven.YMMV. |
OP here. We have a dishwasher, but there's no counter across from it, so there's more floor space in front of it. |
| Get a double oven range. Nice spacing alternative. |
