Half Marathon Training Program

Anonymous
I'm doing the Nike Half at the end of April and have joined TNT. I haven't heard anything from them yet and am getting nervous. Should I start some kind of training on my own? At the moment, I can run about a mile without stopping. YIKES!

Yes, you should immediately start training. 18-20 weeks isn't very long to go from 1 mile to 13.1.

Get to it.

Google "half marathon training beginner." PIck a program and just start. The key to distance running is to be religious about doing the weekly long run. You cannot skip that.

Good luck.

You can't go wrong with Hal Higdon. You've got plenty of time between now and the end of April. Right now, start thinking about just generally improving your fitness and diet. Real training will likely start in early February. The TNT folks are pros at getting first-timers to the finish line, so you'll be fine.

I would spend the month of January doing a program like couch to 5K

I assume TNT will kick off in Feb - and at the point you will have a really solid base to add onto.

Yes, this is what I'm doing right now. I admire anybody that can go from not running to a 1/2 in a few months. I know people do this - I bow down to you. I've been running for two decades and am just doing a half now. I like Hal's method of fairly low mileage during the week and then a long run once a week. I've found it very doable to go from 4 miles at Thanksgiving to 9 miles right now. Good luck!
