We will be getting a new dog in a couple months, and I'm trying to identify a good vet in the N.Bethesda/Rockville/Potomac area. Any recommendations? |
We have been using Kenhaven Animal Hospital (Drs. Manzoor and Sohi) for more than 20 years. Dr. Sohi saved our kitten's life with his knowledge and follow-up care (we had just adopted from the shelter when our kitten showed symptoms--the other kittens in the litter unfortunately died from the illness, while our little guy survived). The entire staff was beyond compassionate on the occasions when we have had to euthanize our pets.
The office is a little run-down, due to the age, but the care is top-notch, in my opinion. http://kenhaven.com/ |
We've used Dr. Leslie Taylor in Potomac for years. She has her office on the side of her home. Her miniature horses, cats and dogs are often seen roaming around. Excellent care and work. She has done everything to shots and check ups to euthanization of our "old boy" with excellence.
Her practice goes by the name of "Canal Clinic" although she is nowhere near the Canal. |
Grove Center Veterinary Hospital is just off of the Shady Grove exit. I'm told that Dr. Bender also does house calls for cats and other animals that have issues leaving the house.

We switched to Kenhaven when our cat was seriously ill and our former vet didn't have time to see us. While we ended up euthanizing the cat, we got very good and sensitive care from Kenhaven, and they were all so compassionate, which helped. Bonus: the cat entrance is right across from a very delicious French bakery, if you're fond of pastries. |

I second canal clinic. I did not even know the vet's name and I have been using them for years. They don't stick you with unreasonable bills. AVOID VCA it is a scam! |
We like Friendship Animal Hospital in Friendship Heights. It is technically in DC, but just over the line. It is a 24 hour emergency hospital and we have ended up there a few times in the middle of the night. Nice to have a place to go for emergencies that already knows you. |
I have had issues with them WRT ethics. They are about MONEY. |
Another recommendation for Dr. Leslie Taylor / Canal Clinic. She is awesome. Very good with our dog and will never try to rip you off. |
We use Dr. Jaffe at the Montgomery Animal Hospital right off Rockville pike in the shopping center with the Pancake House.
301-881-6447 They are really great there and have been wonderful with our dog since he was a puppy for now almost 4 years. |
They all are but I thought Metropolitan Emergency Vet care was very good and cheaper than Friendship. (I've been to Metropolitan too many times! ) They are in Rockville near the Harris Teeter. |
Thanks for all the recommendations. Perhaps a silly follow-up question...do you typically have to line up a vet far in advance of getting a new pet? Like, should I be calling around now to make sure someone will take us on as a new patient, or is not the same as in the human doctor world? |
There are no issues with insurance, like with people, so most vets will take you on without a problem. Just take your pet into the new vet within a few days of getting the pet. Wherever the pet came from, you will want to be sure it's healthy. This will also serve to introduce the new vet to your new pet, and now the vet will have a file on your pet in case there's an emergency, to establish baseline weight, and things like that. You could probably call the vet a few days or a week before you pick up the pet to schedule the appt. |
We've also been going to Dr. Taylor at Canal Clinic for 20+ years and love her.
The name comes from her old office which was directly on the canal on MacArthur Blvd. |
