All this talk and game of chicken going on by everyone is annoying as hell so lets get down to it. What do you think will eventually happen. I have three ideas:
1) A short term deal is outlined and we all go through this bullshit exercise again at the end of the summer of 2013 because the deal will have a bunch of expiring provisions that again need to be addressed 2) We go off the cliff and a "new" debate begins on "cutting" taxes leading to a whole new set of silly arguments and back and forth. A "temporary" Bush tax extension is passed (for everyone or maybe folks making a million keep their increase) but bottom line, the issue will be revisited sometime in the future 3) We go off the cliff and nothing happens to us. Sure out taxes go up, but the end of days scenarios outlined by the press dont really happen. There will be stories about people impacted by the tax increase (people who were barely making ends meet now dealing with living on less due to tax cuts etc) but overall, there will be no real rush to "fix" anything leading to more talking and running to the microphone to blame someone. I guess I dont have a good feeling about the outcome nor confidence in any party doing anything. |

The Bush Era tax cuts will be extended for the first $500k of annual earned income. The number of months an individual will be able to be eligible for unemployment benefits will be reduced which is moot because the economy is expanding and the unemployment rate is declining.
Some cuts in military spending which have already been approved and will be barely noticed as result of force reductions as we draw down our wars in the middle east. That's it - not too difficult to accomplish!!!! |
|
I think the clock will be stopped on Monday night as they continue to fight it out. By Monday afternoon, there will be an announcement that they've come to a truce, agreed to get rid of Bush era tax cuts on income above 350K, increase the debt ceiling, cut military spending some, but not a whole lot, and we keep chugging on.
Come on, this is all a huge waste of everybody's time. On Monday afternoon, they will pass legislation that they should have passed this summer. No one will "win", we will move on to gun control, and what a party that's going to be. |
| sorry, meant to say "Tuesday afternoon" |

i'm more concerned about the farm bill.
Milk/dairy products doubling in price come the new year would devastate the country more than fiscal cliff. |

5:45 pm statement by Obama
And so much for the 72 hour rule for members to see anything. |
Republicans in red farm states are such hypocrites. They want to cut taxes on the wealthy, deprive working people decent healthcare, increase the age of retirement, don't you dare ever speak of reducing their sacred farm subsidies. The Republicans are all so accustomed to taking everything they can from this great country and giving nothing back they've convinced themselves they're selfish behaviors are just and right. It is beyond belief that the Republican members of Congress betrayed the American people and the Constitution they swore to uphold by taking a superseding personal blood oath of dedication to Grover Norquist. This is treason!!!! Choosing to adhere to the dictates of a single man over the Constitution you you have sworn to uphold is TREASON!!!! You are the worst kind of hypocrites. You wrap yourselves in patriotic rhetoric and the American flag while at the same time you have sold out your country and your souls to Grover Norquist. |

OP here
Looks like my theories are coming to fruition. It will be some short term, kick the can down the road type deal and we'll be back at the same place in a few months or so. Complete bullshit |
Why? I would gladly pay $8.00 for a gallon of milk if it would cut the tax farm subsidies to the welfare-cheat dairy farmers (and corn farmers, and wheat farmers, etc. etc.) who suck the government dry on this... |

I think Scott Brown just told us when he couldn't resist gloating. The proof that that is the deal, is that someone has put a gag on him. The only motivation for a R to tell Scott Brown to shut it is tat the R's like the deal and are afraid, if it gets out, before the vote the Dem base will kill it.
Personally I'd rather go off the cliff than give the 1% any more tax cuts. |
| I never realized that the bush tax cuts were so massive for the middle class. All the dems ever said was tax cuts for the rich and the press parroted that lie. Now I can't tell if anything the press or dems say about these issues are true. |
I'm the person who made the comment about more concerned about milk prices. To you and the other person who went on a republican rant, I"m a D and I usually post on these boards as a "no compromise, break those R's backs and bury them in the desert." type. Milk/Dairy would double not because free-market prices would push it so, but because of arcane price-floors from 60-70 years ago that would authorize the Government to purchase milk/dairy at an inflated price. Farmers under that scenario would sell to the gov instead of the free market. This is a case where it is market intervention through price-floors stemming from decades ago, not a subsidy to lower the price of milk from true market price. |
| we need to go over the cliff. Fuck the deal, obama as caved too much already. |
That's because they're all stinky liars! I have to get annoyed that people who make over $250K in Nebraska get the same cut as those in this area. $250K is a lot of income, but it barely puts you in the "top earners" category in large metropolitan areas. Of course, if they put the limit too high, they won't get enough revenue. So, I get why it's happening, but I don't agree with it. I work part-time, so we're under that limit, but if I went back full-time we'd be over. My husband says that maybe this works for me and I'll never have to work full-time again! |
Oh for fuck sake, stop being obtuse. Of course you know the tax cuts were big for everyone. Stop with the "now I'll never know what is true anymore" crap. So unbelievable and it implies that you think we should restore the tax rates on everyone, which obviously you don't. |
