Can anyone tell me what specials and how often your child attends them is like at your elementary schools?
Music Art History Science PE Recess Language and if the school has any extras like drama, student council, sports? |
|
I wouldn't consider history, science, or language to be specials. I am assuming you are referencing "language arts" when you write "language" and not a foreign language program. I wouldn't consider language arts, or even immersion to be specials.
4th grade: Art once a week, 1 hr each. PE twice a week, 40 min. each Music twice a week, 40 min. each Recess T-F, 20 min. each. There is SCA, strings starting in 4th (those students alternate their strings and music classes), band (starts in 5th) and chorus (starts in 5th). |

3rd grade
PE once a week Music once a week Art once a week Library every other week Recess T-Th 20 min No foreign language |
| 17:13 here. I forgot library. Once a week @ 30 min. |
|
Music x2
Art x 2 PE x 2 Recess x5 Spanish x 3 Library x 1 |
These are the same specials my 2nd grader takes. There is also student council for those who are chosen. Other things like drama, sports, chess, robotics, etc. are offered as enrichment classes after school. |
|
Art every other week.
Strategies every other week. Music twice a week. P.E. twice a week. Computer Lab once a week. Library once a week. |
|
Art 1 x per week plus an additional PTA art class 1 x per month
PE 2 x per week Music 2 x per week Foreign Language 2 x per week Library 1 x per week Guidance 1 x every other week Computer 1 x per month Strategies 1 x per month Recess 15 minutes each day Many afterschool activities I love the idea learning an instrument through band and strings, but I don't want to take away any more time from the core curriculum or recess. I wish they were offered after school. |
| Specifically, I wish band and strings were taught on half day Mondays. |
| Surprised there is so little recess and that it is considered a "special". |
+1 We are in Arlington if that matters. |
I thought this was standard. We are the same as above. The "extras" outside of school time are supported or coordinated by the PTA (and parents pay extra) for Mad Science, Spanish and French. We also have a book club for the older kids, a GEMS (girls in engineering, math, science) and something similar for boys (these are free and lead by a teacher). We often have Girls on the Run. We do not have drama or robotics. |
| Do any FCPS elementary schools have foreign language other than after school or immersion? Just as part of their regular specials? |
| Yes, the program is called FLES. |
| I don't consider recess to be a special, however, I included it because it was on the initial list |
