Hip, but laid back bars in DC

Anonymous
I'm looking for a bar to throw a surprise birthday get together. I'm looking for a fun, hip, but most importantly LAID BACK bar in DC (i.e. no suits and legal talk).

Any ideas? We're new to the area from SF and missing the west coast vibe.

Ha ha ha, wiping tear away looking for west coast vibe. I suggest that you accept that the authentic dc resides in the stuffy legal talk and lobbyist lunches etc etc and give up your search to replicate sf. Because it ain't gonna happen. Dc is not hip.

But ok, I do have a recommendation anyway: red derby in Columbia heights. Could also try looking glass lounge in petworth, which is less hip, but more spacious for a party.

Meridian Pint. Not quite hip, but big enough for you all to be comfortable, great beer list, and nice space (upstairs ... downstairs is a bit dark but does have some games).

Well, nobody wears suits anymore except perhaps on hill. I've never witnessed a lot of legal talk at any normal bars is go to. Stoney's. daily grill had a separate room you could rent out. That's two options. Also. Public in tenley.

You can get the upstairs free at Thai Tanic. Totally random and cute lounge space w/ private bar. Maybe the big upstairs room at DC9? For maximum hip, try crashing Jimmy Valentine's. DJs are great, it's totally hidden, and I doubt your guests have been there. Where else...how about U st music hall or there is an alley art space near eastern market you could rent.

There's a place in Old Town Alexandria with shuffleboard that isn't douchey, but it's not really hip - the Lighthorse Tavern. The places in know in DC with shuffleboard tend to be kind of fratty.

The Big Hunt has skeeball and is really laid back.

Oh, and Black Jack on 14th Street has bocce and is hip in that (kind of not actually hip) 14th Street kind of way. But that place has dreadful food.

Apparently I am in the most critical mood ever right now.

People love the Codmother on U Street. Been to a bunch of parties there. No games, but it's a cool place and easy to get to. Nice fish and chips, too.
