| For Xmas her older bro is getting a major gift (computer) and I know little sis will be like, what! But he is 12 and needs it for school, not that she will really get that. What is smg for her that would really be awesome (but hopefully in $100 range)? Is there hope? What would you do? |

American Girl doll? (full disclosure - DD is 8 and not getting one, but all of her friends seem to have them)
|
| Ummm, you don't know what your daughter wants for Christmas? As her mother you should have some clue as to what she likes play with. You did not tell us what her interests are so how can we tell you what to get her? |

Thanks. Right, OP here. She likes many things, fans are pretend play, stuffed animals, electronics (but I limit those a lot), arts and crafts.
She hasn't shown interest in Am Girl yet, thought the dolls seem nice. |

A huge hit last Christmas for my kids (6 and 8) was a Chatimal monkey--it repeats back what they say in a silly voice. (There's also a hamster.) It doesn't long-lasting play value, at least for my kids, but it could serve as a fun, gee-whiz toy to open and enjoy on Christmas. The instant gratification could offset the sting of not getting her own computer. (And only $25.)
They also got and are enjoying a Bloggie video camera if you want something bigger. Its also electronic, of course, but geared toward creation and creativity. They do use the video but also take lots of still photos. |
| My 7-year-old DD is getting a Kindle Fire. Voracious reader. |
|
Wii
DS Kindle Fire IPod or IPod Touch Stereo system/boom box type system |
| My 7.5yo DD is getting a Kindle (the basic one) plus the case with the light in it for Hanukkah. She has been talking about nothing else for weeks, if not months. She is a huge reader. |
| I got my DD Fractiles and a 20 in bike. |
| I'd go with a Kindle Fire (or Nook Color HD). She can read, play games and even do some web surfing. |
|
Does she like Legos?
A Lego robotics class? I'm not into buying ipads and the like for young kids. |
Thank you for the wide range of thoughtful suggestions, Ive been busy googling all the ones I didn't know

This is just me, but if the purchase is large and needed (like the computer), I would buy that outside of Christmas.
I would get them each a normal amount of presents (whatever I could afford), and then a week later or earlier, buy him a computer "because he needs one for school." That way, no one is expecting a $400 present next year at Christmas, and you aren't buying something for DD just because it's expensive and fills a role for Christmas morning. |
