Gift card amount for teachers

Anonymous
Hi,

With holidays upon us, I was just wondering how much to give to my DS's teacher. What is the typical amount? Do you give to each teacher including those teaching specials?

TIA!

Give what you feel comfortable giving.

I want to give something without being insulting (too little) or making the teacher feel uncomfortable (too much). I just want to know what people typically give.

Thanks!

We are limited to $25 in Montgomery County

I don't think you can give too little. I'm a teacher and I have never been insulted by a gift. We gave my own child's teachers around $20 when he had one teacher. In upper elementary we gave between $10 and $20 last year when he had more than one.

I'm in FCPS I usually do a nice box of chocolates and $20 gift card to Starbucks if I know they drink coffee. At the end of the year, I gave them a GC to a Spa for a mani or pedi.

I think in general teachers are always very appreciative. I have heard from teacher friends they prefer GC because otherwise they couldn't store everything given to them.

This is a really good idea--I'm not aware of any lmit in Fairfax County. Recently, the room moms collected and gave teacher a $100+ gift card to Nordstroms for b-day (plus a party . . . on school time).

Wow. That sounds more like an end of year gift. Very generous. In 20 years teaching I've never heard of anyone getting a class gift or party for a birthday.

Does anyone give to the P.E., music, or art teachers?

I am an elementary music teacher, and I used to get about 15 gifts or so, out of 600+students, so on average mostly not. I think it depends on the school. I never took any offense, after all, the classroom teachers see the children every day, and once you open the can of worms, it gets tricky, and expensive!. (I am also the mom of 3 ES students). My favorites are hand made cards the kids drew for me.

Chocolates usually end up in the staff lounge.

17:47 Is that good or bad? I wouldn't mind if they were shared. The reason I ask is that I try to pick up the bell shaped Ferrero Rochets. My daughter loves to give them to her teachers (unless she eats them first). They are festive, and a little higher-end than some of the other candies. Easy to regift if that's what the teacher wants to do with them. I did send a very $$ box of Godiva to a private school for all the teachers but nary got a single thank you so won't go that route again.

17:47 here. It's not really good or bad. My DW and I both teach in FCPS elementary schools. We think a lot of the chocolates end up in the lounge because so much of it is received. It gets shared to a point, but I know a good number of teachers who are going to the gym, watching what they eat, and just don't eat it. I'm sure what gets left before break gets tossed. We don't eat most of what we bring home. I am able to give some away.

I am a teacher and when I get gifts, my favorite ones are the ones made by the kids (I have taught high school and middle school) or ones that symbolize something special from the kid. I am grateful for any gift I get, but I most definitely do not expect them.

I'm sure there must be limits at FCPS too, but I assume each person is allowed to give up to $25 and the teacher may receive a gift card above $25 if it is from a group.
