Agree. There was some bad photoshopping - so what? There's a lot of bad photoshopping out there. Is the AP really going to pull half their pictures? Or was their statement inaccurate?

I take it you have not followed any of the developments in this story, nor read the thread?

I've read the entire thread. I think y'all are really really nuts and I also think the news agencies are playing strange games right now. They are either lying in their reason for taking down the picture, or are setting themselves up for huge problems with other edited pictures.

I wondered this as well: what celeb pic out there which is posed like that is NOT edited? Why pull it when all other pics of all other celebs which were edited are out there?

You guys aren’t getting it. The Mother’s Day photo wasn’t “edited” in the way you’re thinking. They either spliced in different images of the kids/kate or completely retouched a photo from 2023 to pass it off as something more recent. This wasn’t some innocent contouring or lighting changes.

So what?

I also think the news agencies were responding to the way the photo was presented, as a photo of the Princess after her surgery. The caption on the photo on Instagram and the details provided to the press (that it was a photo taken earlier in the week by William) now appear to be at least partially false.

It's one thing to publish a slightly altered photograph of a celebrity that is what it says it is -- an Instagram photo of Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl that has a retouching filter on it, for instance. Sure, it's retouched, but as long as it was actually taken at the Super Bowl and is of Taylor Swift, that level of retouching doesn't really detract from it. It's still basically what it purports to be.

The Mothers Day photo, it turns out, is probably a photo from last year that has been heavily edited to appear more recent, and does not show the Princess recovering from surgery at all. It's not what the palace said it was. It's a lie. Thus it is not merely "retouched." It is manipulated to appear to depict something it doesn't actually depict, and the palace declined the opportunity to provide an unretouched photo (because this would prove that it was never what the palace presented it to be).

If she was just on bed rest for a high risk pregnancy, or there were "positive" events in the pipeline like a reconciliation or a new initiative then why not sit her at a desk for a brief zoom to thank the public or even just a real picture?

The paper notes that Kate will be “work[ing] from bed” and “aides insist her work will not stall.”
(This claim about working in bed will be brought up later as conspiracy theories start to flourish. During the pandemic, Kate regularly held Zoom calls with these institutions, and screenshots of these meetings were released to the press. Questions will be raised about why any images of Kate or updates/anecdotes from employees of the institutions haven’t leaked, if she’s been working while she recovers.)

January 24, 2024- People magazine’s royal reporter writes that Kate’s hospitalization was unexpected. “The carefully guarded news about Kate’s situation came as a surprise even to those who work closely with the royal family, PEOPLE understands.” (This is later also reported by Page Six.) These details are seen as more indications that Kate’s health situation was more dire than has been reported.

January 24, 2024- U.K. tabloid the Mirror publishes a story titled “Kate ‘your best friend one minute and worst enemy the next’, expert claims.” The Mirror sources the story from what it describes as “a recent article for the Daily Mail” written by royal reporter Robert Jobson — but links to a post from 2022. The story alleges that William and Kate have “quite extreme mood swings” and claims that the two “give as good as they get” in fights with each other. Within hours, however, the story is updated and Kate’s name is replaced with Harry’s. The title of the story now live on the Mirror’s website is “Prince Harry ‘your best friend one minute and worst enemy the next,’ expert claims.” The Mirror adds an editorial note to the bottom of the post reading, “A previous version of this story erroneously referred to Kate, Princess of Wales, instead of Prince Harry” and removes the link to the 2022 Daily Mail story — the link now redirects to the Daily Mail’s homepage.
This is just weird. It’s being seized upon by conspiracy theorists as an apparent example of the royal press offices directing a media outlet to change a story, or a media outlet trying to write a story about a possible conflict in the Waleses’ marriage. In all likelihood this was someone looking to make a story quota who messed up.

January 25, 2024- The Sun reports that William has visited Kate in the hospital every day, but says her children have not visited (children are not allowed in the London Clinic, per hospital policy; multiple outlets later report that William and Kate did not want to disrupt their children’s schedules and used FaceTime to stay in touch). (While royal children of the previous generation visited relatives when they were in hospitals, this is the first time we’ve known about either William and Kate needing inpatient treatment. There’s no precedent — there’s a big difference between the children visiting their mother and new sibling at a hospital and children visiting their mother after major surgery.)

January 26, 2024- The King is admitted to the London Clinic for his prostate treatment and members of the press are apparently once again allowed to gather outside the London Clinic. The Queen is photographed leaving the hospital in the afternoon, after apparently arriving with the King for his treatment (the arrival was not photographed) earlier that day. People magazine reports that the King has visited Kate. The Queen is photographed once again visiting the King in the hospital that evening.

January 27, 2024- The Queen is photographed arriving at and leaving the hospital.

January 28, 2024- The Queen is once again photographed visiting her husband at the London Clinic. Note: Whether purposeful or not, the Queen’s public arrivals and departures at the hospital make an obvious contrast to William’s apparent absence.

January 28, 2024- Spanish journalist Concha Calleja doubles down on her report that Kate is in medical distress and claims that the princess is in a medically induced coma. Prominent Spanish media outlets begin to report her claims. Note: Although this story has been bubbling under the surface of the discourse about Kate’s condition, it really begins to spread now.

January 29, 2024- Kensington Palace announces Kate has returned home , is making good progress , and will recover privately . The Daily Mail later reports that William drove her home. Despite the fact that members of the media were apparently set up around the hospital in order to photograph the King and Queen, her departure is not photographed.

January 29, 2024- The King leaves the hospital. He and the Queen smile and wave for photographers outside of the London Clinic. Once again, we have a very public contrast between the King and Kate. Obviously they both are experiencing very different issues and have very different responsibilities, but it nonetheless draws attention to the differences.

Why are you just copy and pasting huge sections of that Nielsen Labs article? Just link to the article and then say what you have to say. I should probably report these because you actually are not supposed to just cut and paste stuff like this without providing context.

So the actual story is that Kate Middleton has an eating disorder and collapsed right after Christmas because of her eating disorder. It's pretty bad and the abdominal surgery was to fix some of the damage her eating disorder did to her organs. She then needed to go to in-patient treatment. The royals are freaks about mental health issue and let her obvious eating disorder go way too long without any intervention. Now they're covering it up because they can't even say "The princess is suffering from exhaustion, has been admitted to inpatient rehabilitation and needs time and privacy to recover"which is the euphemistic way an an American PR firm would handle it for an American celebrity.

The palace is awful. Poor woman.

I agree, the context in which the photo was presented matters and that was the grave PR error.

The context is that the crazy stories originated within Meghan and Harry fan spaces, as I figured. The Royal Family is doing themselves no favors by being coy, however.

The British tabloids get a drip feed and access from royal family /royal press and they are all respecting Kates privacy and not publishing salacious stories like they did about Meghan, Diana, Fergie.

Just to expand on this point from a PP: that Nielsen Labs article upthread noted how the behavior of the UK press during all this is interesting, because they've essentially toed the party line on Catherine, including the tabloids. Not only are they not publishing "Where is Kate???" stuff like you might expect them to, but they aren't even publishing puff pieces like "How Kate's Staying Fit During Her Recovery" or "Friends Say Kate's in Good Spirits, Anxious to Get Back to Work." This indicates a fair amount of collaboration between the press and the palace in terms of coverage. That planted photo of William and Catherine in the car yesterday backs this up -- it helps the palace with their storyline (Catherine is fine and recovering, William and Catherine are fine and happy, etc.) and doesn't do a lot for the newspapers because it's a blurry photo from a distance -- it's not really a big get. And the UK press, including the tabloids, also complied with the palace's request that they NOT publish the photo of Carole Middleton and someone who appears to maybe be Catherine from last week, even though that photo is much more likely to draw eyeballs.

So my question is this:

What has Kensington Palace promised the UK press corp, including the tabloids who are notoriously rabid for royals content, to get this level of compliance with an effort to keep Catherine and whatever is going on with her under wraps? Because I do think they have been promised something.

My guesses:

- Healthy pregnancy, and promised pregnancy and new baby content, pregnancy is high risk because of Catherine's age and they don't want to publicize it given the risk, so she is essentially going into hiding until she's in her third trimester.

- Some kind of new role or initiative for Catherine that would be unprecedented for a Princess consort or Queen consort, that will ramp up as William and Catherine take on larger roles as Charles gets older.

- Harry and William reconciling details.

- OR a bunch of leaked dirt on Harry and Meghan from KP.

I do think they've been promised something. That's why no leaks, very little speculation in most of the UK press, compliance with use of images, etc. UK press is in on it, which has created the info vacuum into which the foreign press and online sleuths have stepped.

PP. It’s also noted that Will and Kates nanny is from Spain and so is that reporter woman who is Still standing firm in her story that Kate was in a come and hospitalized in December.

The anonymous Twitter posting video of the ambulance leaving the palace on December 28th is also interesting . That account hasn’t posted since nor has KP provided any explanation for it

Which makes it even more disturbing because it's pretty clear that the original photo was taken on a day in November 2023 when Kate and the kids did an event at a baby bank. So not only did they swap out clothes on the kids and Kate to disguise this fact, they seem to have swapped out the kid's faces to age them up a bit so it could more convincingly be passed off as a photo from March 2024. Which makes NO SENSE because if they wanted to share a photo from March 2024, don't they have access to all the necessary people and, uh, a camera? They could have just taken a new picture.

OR they could have declined to take a new picture because Kate doesn't want to be photographed (totally fine and understandable! I actually hate being photographed generally and very much relate to not wanting to be photographed while recovering from surgery or a medical condition) and just posted an old photo or a message.

They chose the weird, manipulative, misleading thing instead. WHY???

It is not not from 2024. That's the whole point. This photo was taken in November 2023 and does not show the Princess recuperating from surgery in January 2024, as the palace claimed. It was from 2023 and it appears that the HEAVY retouching done to the photo was not to "but the best faces" forth, but to make the photo appear to have been taken at a different time.

THAT is the issue. Not photoshop in general, but the use of photoshop to mislead the public and the press on the timing of the photo. It was a lie.
