You may not agree, but they have a point.

The fact that Laura Stewart is running to unseat one of only two Black women on the board is indeed noteworthy and said. I'm no blind defender of Shebra, because there are lots of valid criticisms to make about her performance on the board, but if Laura was as progressive as she thinks she is, she would have backed a Black woman to run against Shebra. But instead, she feels entitled to the role.

This is the main thing that matters here. Shebra is not deserving of a third term.

She’s more deserving of Stewart. I really tried to want to vote for Stewart but I just can’t after seeing her at the candidate forums. She seems nice but very much overwhelmed and in over her head.

Disagree. Stewart's been advocating at the state and county level for years. She's very well-prepared for a seat at the board table.

Key word here is advocate. There is no room for advocates on the Board of Education!

Shebra was an advocate before she got on the BOE. I like Shebra, she is smart, and over the past 8 years, she has learned a lot. However, she was a BIG supporter of McKnight. They are sorority sisters. I suspect that Shebra played a significant role in ensuring that McKnight got that $1.3 million.

Oh wait, are we voting out any BOE connected with a failed superintendents in Montgomery County? If so, where was this outrage for Josh Starr and the curriculum 2.0 and everyone that supported him? My favorite apple Ballot endorsed BOE board president from that time was consistently re-elected until she decided not to run again and no theories were forthcoming why she was such a supporter.

I’m still deciding who I plan to support for BOE but (1) I will never strictly vote Apple ballot candidates ever again based on the Josh Starr era and instead look at positions of candidates and (2) weigh the past performance with the values/position of the challenger matching up with mine when deciding about whether to vote for an incumbent or not. So that might lead me to Shebra Evans or it might not but trying to link being in the same predominantly black sorority as the past superintendent as a reason not to support them when plenty of other board members have supported unsuccessful past superintendents that had various financial packages for non-renewal, early retirement etc, is not cool. If you didn’t have that energy for the other BOE members and past presidents you can miss with that mess right now.

Starr was years ago. Move on. The current BOE failed our kids.

I would argue the past boards also failed our kids at least since Starr. But the earlier poster only wanted to hold one person accountable…not every incumbent this cycle, and didn’t give any indication that they were using the same yardstick when they voted for past BOE members. So when they tried to insinuate the connection/support to a failed superintendent was based on being in the same historically black sorority, they were definitely sending a signal. Especially because we had superintendents that failed who did not share the same sorority and BOE members that supported them and had no insinuations made as to why.

DP. I distinctly remember Evans supporting McKnight at a time when it was clear McKnight had promoted a serial sexual harasser knowing he had issues, had failed to fix the complaint process (yes she wasn't the only one, but she is one of the supers that failed on this front) and had lost the confidence of union members very very quickly. I recall Evans expressing frustration at the notion that McKnight should be fired. That made me really angry and is why I am not voting for her.

Same with Lynne Harris. Can’t believe these incumbents have any supporters left. They all need to go.

I don't remember Harris supporting McKnight the way Evans did but maybe I am wrong.

I think you’re wrong. I recall Lynne Harris being wishy washy for far too long on whether to force McKnight to resign.

So you don't recall Harris being angry that firing McKnight was even being considered?

I don't think Harris is perfect but Evans was far worse on this issue and it's not unreasonable to wonder what role Evans played in McKnight's massive payout.

citation please?

I'm basing my vote on my recollections described above. You can vote however you want and are free to provide citations if that will help you.

That’s what I figured. Just making sure your claims were just based on the vibes as I suspected.

No, based on what I remember. Do you remember something different? Specifically, was Harris angry that firing McKnight was even being considered?

How do you remember that Evans “was angry that firing McKnight was even being considered”? What public statements from Evans made you think that at the time and cause you to remember feeling that way now? What actions do you remember? Rumors about her being sorority sisters on DCUM don’t count.

No need for a citation if you can’t find one. But I’m genuinely interested in what made you feel this way. All BOE members reacted the same way publicly from what I remember - which was to say nothing for legal reasons and then make bland statements to the press. Other than Silvestre of course, who had to go before the county council and testify about it all.

I remember her suggesting as such during a BOE meeting.

I don't care about the sorority. Didn't know about the sorority thing when I made my voting decision and don't think it's remotely relevant.

Adding that Linda Plummer, president of the local NAACP chapter, who said the BOE was "scapegoating" McKnight, has endorsed Evans in this race. That's far more relevant than any sorority association.

I voted for Evans twice before. I think eight years is enough and am not voting for her for a third time.

Leaving it blank doesn't help, and voting for her opponent will only make things worse.

Thanks for confirming that you’re just making it up. She never “suggested as such” in any meeting. Not surprising that you just have some sort of amorphous recollection that the black BOE member “suggested” she was “angry” at the firing of the black superintendent. And that it’s what you’re using to vote for her white opponent.

Her “parents at MCPS don’t know how good they have it” statement really irked me. Time for someone new like Rita Montoya who is coming in with a mindset that there’s a lot that needs to be fixed.

+1 Anyone who thinks that just McKnight was the issue won’t have my vote. Why I can’t vote for Lynne Harris who wanted everyone to move on from all of the issues facing MCPS once they fired McKnight. Her “parents at MCPS don’t know how good they have it” statement really irked me. Time for someone new like Rita Montoya who is coming in with a mindset that there’s a lot that needs to be fixed.

Disagree. McKnight promoted a serial sexual harasser. No confidence votes from the union. MCPS is much better off without her.

The no confidence votes were because teachers wanted to close school. That's exactly why you should never vote for the MCEA candidates.

They are are projecting because they are YT and that’s what they would do (are doing with Lynne). They have no integrity but are suggesting it’s the “other” that doesn’t. Classic trump ploy.

The only person running who is pro-SROs and Moms for Liberty is Brenda Diaz, so if those are your sticking points as a voter, just avoid her and you’ll be fine.
