Same with you, actually. Though school starts at 7:45, there are plenty of late arrivals and drop-off traffic can remain heavy up to 7:50 or 7:55. Then once you pull out on Victory and turn right to head toward Gainsborough, there is often a back-up and pressure to get through the stop sign. So there can be bottlenecks for awhile after the bell rings. The accident likely happened a few minutes before police were called, not exactly at 8:04. Sounds like you may not be familiar with that area. |
Not the PP you are referring to but my kid goes to Churchill and the traffic is noticeably better by 7:50. The pressure to get through the stop sign at Gainsborough is just not as bad by then. Even if it happened at 8:00 am, the Churchill traffic drops considerably by then. More than likely, the guy was speeding and not paying attention which I have seen too much of. Nothing to do with Churchill or the "drop off" traffic. |
| My child also goes to Churchill and said that the accident happened after school started and that the child in the car was not even a student at Churchill. Non the less, it sounds like a terrible accident though it has nothing to do with Churchill. I'm sure the news story will be updated today and we will hear the actual facts of the situation. I do agree that a speed camera or something around the school to deter speeding would be very helpful. It's not always the kids who are speeding (though they can be pretty bad). I've seen lots of parents do dangerous things there also. |
This does not surprise me - the AD at Churchill is a problem. I reported a previous thread where a number of people were reporting inappropriate behavior of this coach. This was in August. I copied the AD and emailed the principal. The AD immediately responded defensively and inappropriately without copying the principal. She was gracious in thanking me for letting her know. I then forwarded her the AD response and just said FYI and said that it looked like there was a problem. She was again gracious and thanked me for forwarding his communication. I'm not a parent of a child there. I'm fairly active with athletics elsewhere in MCPS. I've gone through the coach's training, etc. the AD is a problem and I would guess is hiding things. If you are a Churchill parent, I would just immediately start cc'ing the principal and Jeff Sullivan (the AD's other boss). And post here to let others know so that they can then also contact Sullivan. The AD is Sullivan's and the principal's problem and I'd start putting it on their lap. That's the only way to help students. Good luck. I'm sorry you all have to deal with this. It's terrible. |

My child was late to school today and there was still traffic surrounding Churchill at 8:00.
Parents can speed as much as students. The school dropoffs are also on neighborhood two lane roads which are prone to being congested. Just because the driver was a parent doesn't mean the school community should dismiss the incident. Any earlier, a student pedestrian could have been struck when the car left the road. A van with a speed camera is regularly parked on Gainsborough near Cabin John. Why can't one be parked in front of Churchill or a permanent camera errected like Wootton has? Is the county waiting for a magic number of accidents or a fatality before doing something? |
If problems were reported in August, then why is this coach still coaching? Why is he the track head coach for the upcoming winter and spring seasons? Shouldn't Churchill be advertising for a new head coach? The MCCPTA Health and Safety Committee is looking at the coaching culture in athletics countywide to identify problem areas and schools. Please contact Gillian Huebner - gillianhuebner@gmail.com to share information. She has been a strong advocate for all students in MCPS on this issue and needs specific details about Churchill to move forward and expedite your complaint to the decision makers within Central Office. As you already found out, the AD will bury your complaints. The principal is non-reactive because she is new and might not know what to do. Mrs. Heckert definitely doesn't know the history within the athletic program or how damaging this coach can be to children. Mr. Sullivan did not even meet with parents for previous complaints and he knows there's an issue with the AD. Please reach out to the MCCPTA so they can help advocate for our school. Also, if you have not done so - fill out the MCPS Bulling and Harassment form to formally document your complaint. An email just gets deleted and no paper record is created regarding your complaint. Just how MCPS operates. They will bury this until outside eyes know the details but they can't destroy a Bullying and Harassment complaint form. This would be the appropriate form to document bullying including verbal abuse and also sexual harassment: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/forms/pdf/230-35.pdf |
Speeding is not the only issue. DO you know how many times I see parents on their phones? You would think with all the fancy cars parents at Churchill drive, they would learn to use the Bluetooth. |
So is running the red light at Gainsborough/Tuckerman to get to school drop-off in the morning which I've seen parents do MANY times. Very dangerous. There needs to be a red light camera there. |
+1 Can still be congested traffic between 7:45 and 8:00 |
They need a turn signal at that intersection. It is incredibly difficult to make a left onto Gainsborough from Tuckerman in the morning and afternoon. If they want to disable it during other parts of the day fine, but I've seen where only 2 cars can get through that light and mostly it's on the yellow turning red. |
Yes-- there needs to be a full traffic study. But I'd recommend a stop sign on Victory to help cars get out of the lot, particularly to go straight and turn left onto Victory (so traffic isn't stuck in the lot, unable to exit). And some mechanism to smooth the departure along Gainsborough so cars don't get so backed up going that way. I was wondering about a stop light to help cars turn left from Victory onto Gainsborough, that operates as a stoplight during morning/afternoon drop off and blinks red/yellow at other times of the day (which would also slow down cars on Gainsborough, generally). Most parents are probably wanting drive to Tuckerman, but might find that turning left onto Gainsborough gets them out of the traffic tangle faster, even if it means driving a few extra blocks. I don't typically drive in the morning but I did today and a student was in a car that turned left from Victory into the lot into that new lefthand lane, but then zoomed past me (in the righthand lane to go straight to park in the spots that are straight ahead. Occasionally sending security guards out to confiscate the parking passes of poor drivers in the lot would both help increase safety in the lot and maybe make these new drivers more responsible drivers in all contexts. |

I would agree the light at Gainsborough and Tuckerman needs a turn signal. That is part of the problem as to why traffic gets congested there at busy times around the school. Moving the parental car loop to the Stadium Lot probably has added to the congestion at Gainsborough and Tuckerman. The lack of a light might have been a factor in the first accident at Gainsborough and Tuckerman this school year.
I would also agree there needs to be a four way stop or a traffic guard at the intersection of Victory and the exit to the Churchill student parking lot both in the morning and afternoon. That is a particularly dangerous intersection with students crossing at that crosswalk which bottlenecks traffic trying to turn towards Gainsborough. I also support the comment about the danger of talking on a cell phone while driving. Current school administrators are guilty of violating that driving rule as well as parents and students at Churchill. Speed is an issue in the neighborhood. Speed cameras would be a great addition to the roads around Churchill especially Gainsborough. Why have a camera down the hill by Regency Estates but not by Churchill? I am just afraid a pedestrian is going to get hit again like last year with some of the recklessness. Speed enforcement would remind all drivers to slow down. I think there were changes made at Churchill this year that might have ended one problem but created others. A new traffic study is warranted since there have been at least two accidents this school year in the vicinity of the school. I think parents and students who drive to school on a regular basis should be included in the discussion because they would have valuable insight as what is it like navigating these roads. Perhaps even invite the input of neighbors because they probably know where the crashes tend to occur and why they occur more than anyone. Ultimately, there are county experts who decide where signage, lights, and speed cameras go. Mrs. Heckert and MCPS should have these experts come to Churchill and monitor traffic over a period of time to see the daily patterns and make changes on the public roads where needed and recommend changes for the school campus lots. |

Here's the thing people aren't understanding.
#1 Traffic studies are expensive. #2 You can't just add an arrow at Gainsborough and Tuckerman without changing the timing on the light which then impacts all of the traffic along Tuckerman, Falls, Seven Locks etc... all carriers of massive amounts of traffic during that same time period. #3 Given #1 and #2 the traffic study would likely be more extensive and expensive than just this one intersection. #4 Given all of the above and the variety of needs in our county I don't know how anyone could justify this expense just to shave 5 minutes off of the 15 minute experience of this small subset of citizens. |
Here's what you aren't understanding, the traffic study is needed for safety. The current situation is only a matter of time till a student is injured or killed. |
I agree with you. I'm the PP you quoted and bolded. A parent of a child there should report it - note that I'm not a parent of a child at WC. My children go to another HS. I reported to the AD and principal that the track coach was the subject of multiple postings here and they should know about it. At this point, I also agree that parents should just go outside the school to complain. The AD and principal know about it. |
