As much as I loath Trump, I think a former FBI director should know better to post something that could be remotely construed as a threat, especially towards someone as thin-skinned and petty as Trump.

This is either a lapse in judgement on his part or he has something to promote and is intentionally drawing attention to himself.

It was an odd choice. Maybe a spontaneous decision that he now regrets?

As for it being a threat, maybe Comey was defining "86" as "reject, discard, or cancel," which is not the same as permanently terminate.
