The cyclist is traveling in the left lane at a rate of speed 1/3 below the speed limit and normal flow of traffic. The car made a pass that provided a safe distance between the cyclist and the vehicle. The cyclist complains that the pass was made over double yellow, okay, but the cyclist continues to travel in the left lane as a slower moving vehicle, demonstrating that they were determined not to let anyone pass them. It’s also funny to see cyclist claim they stopped at red light, when it looks like they are illegally in the crosswalk and the spedometer says 4 MPH, indicating that they are still moving and not actually stopped.

Are you blind or just willfully ignoring the vehicle parked in the right lane in the first photo?

DP, but what I think he's getting at is in the pictures after the pass the bike is still in the left/travel lane rather than the right/parking lane and he thinks the bike should be there except for when passing a parked car. That's all based on the normal speed business, which he seems to think requires bikes and cars going under a certain speed to constantly be darting in and out of the lane with parked cars.

The law is very clear that slower vehicles must move right when the right lane is unobstructed. There is no ambiguity or nuance.

I don't know the cyclist, perhaps they were getting ready to turn left.

Either way, the cyclist has the right to ride in the lane and it is illegal for the driver to cross the double yellow line.

So you are wrong on both counts.

There is no blanket prohibition for crossing a double yellow line in DC. However, the cyclist has recorded themselves committing at least one clear traffic violation.

You need a driving refresher if you believe this.

And what law did the cyclist break?

Please cite me the DC Code. The cyclist on the other hand clearly committed a traffic violation and helpfully even provided the evidence.

18 DCMR § 2201.2
Upon all roadways, any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand plane then available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road, driveway, or alley.

The driver did make an illegal pass. Even assuming they never exceeded 25mph during the pass, it is illegal to pass within 100 feet of an intersection.

2202.3No vehicle shall at any time be driven to the left side of the roadway under the following conditions; Provided, that these restrictions shall not apply to driving on a one-way roadway:
(a)When approaching the crest of a grade or upon a curve in the highway where the driver’s view is obstructed within such distance as to create a hazard if another vehicle approaches from the opposite direction;
(b)When approaching within one hundred feet (100 ft.) of or while traversing any intersection or railroad grade crossing;

The vast majority of cars are violating multiple laws on any given trip. Many without even realizing it. To then focus on whether the bike is below the "normal" speed is rather ridiculous when no one could tell you what the normal speed for that stretch of road even is.

It’s impossible to evaluate because we don’t know where the intersection is from the photos. This is why no one believes cyclists anymore. Keep digging the hole is only getting deeper.

There is a whole suv beyond the double yellow and you want to blame the cyclist because they exist???? The other picture is a goddamm red light approach.

Show me the code where the car violated the law.

The other still does not show a car running a red light. It shows a car past a red light. The person who took the video and chose that still over presumably one that shows the car actually running a red light wants us to take them at their word.

Cyclists have zero credibility and you just keep making it worse with your behavior. No one believes you anymore.

We are doing remedial driver education here it seems. Even if the light was yellow, the law is that the driver must stop unless it is unsafe for them to do so. It takes an awful lot of creativity to imagine a scenario whereby it is safer for the driver to speed up to run through a yellow light that will turn red while the car has not crossed the intersection than to slow down and stop. Relevant DC code is here:

2103.5 A STEADY YELLOW SIGNAL alone shall have the following meaning:
(a) Vehicular traffic facing a steady yellow signal is thereby warned that a related green signal is being terminated or that a red signal will be exhibited thereafter, or both; and
(b) Vehicular traffic shall stop before entering the nearest crosswalk of the intersection, unless so close to the intersection that a stop cannot safely be made.

Cool story bro. Where is the picture of the driver running a yellow light?

Driving on the wrong side of the road is a violation in the DC code. Why don't you do us all a favor and test this? The next time you are driving behind a cop car in the city, casually pull across the double yellow line and pass them. See what happens and report back. We'll be waiting.

DC Law: A cyclist can take the full lane.

DC law: when there are two lanes, a slower moving vehicle must move to the right lane.

Thanks for playing.

When I was like 16 or 17, I sped up to make it through a light that turned yellow and got pulled over. The cop said I ran the red. I said I cleared it while it was yellow and I was still below the speed limit. He told me that it was illegal to *speed up* to beat a yellow light and that I'm supposed to instead slow down.

I didn't fight the cop - I was like damn, didn't know that and now I do. Haven't done it since.

I ride on DC streets on a daily basis and realized pretty quickly that the tactic of darting in and out of the right lane to let cars pass would get me killed pretty quickly. Anyone faulting the cyclist for not doing this either knows nothing about cycling or wishes them dead.

Hah, pretty sure that PP here defending the SUV driver and blaming the cyclist for all of the woes of the world meets both of your conditions above.

Bikes are allowed to take the full lane, look it up.

In this case, there are two lanes. The bicyclist has recorded themselves traveling in the left lane going 16 MPH with no obstructions in the right lane. The law requires them at that point to move to the right lane. They do not. That is a clear cut traffic violation.

I would sneer at you to “look it up”, but I already provided the relevant DC Code.

You should tell your friends to not film themselves breaking the law while trying to make some point about a car that they claim is breaking the law. It’s what the kids call a “self own”.

There are cars parked in the right lane, ergo there are not two lanes.

You show zero concern about the more dangerous car illegally crossing double yellow lines - a hard no, to pass the cyclist. The only time it is legal to cross double yellow lines is in the event of a left turn. Period, that is it.

This is why you people lose. Because you have bad faith and people get tired of this crap. If you want to pretend that there is not a photo in this thread of a cyclist going 16 MPH down a road in the left lane with an unobstructed right lane, you can go ahead and be crazy on your own.

"you people"

The cyclist has the legal right to take the full lane. The driver, impatient, passes illegally on the left. And then you wonder why people advocate for safer streets including bike lanes. You cannot even admit how wrong the driver is.

There is nothing in the DC Code that says that driver passing over double yellow is illegal. I can provide you a citation to the code that the driver did a legal thing, providing three feet of space to safely pass a cyclist.

I can also provide you a citation to the code that the cyclist did an illegal thing, being a slower moving vehicle in the left lane not moving to the right lane when it was unobstructed.

If you are going to bicycle, first you should really know the traffic law and second you should not break it.

The cyclist in the photo is approaching a red light in the second photo and then sitting at it. Probably to take a (legal) left hand turn.

Lots of assumptions here so here is one from me, I will take your points at face value and then assume that their spedometer is out if calibration by 4 MPH. So they were going even slower than what they reported.

Actually there is a very reasonable explanation for this. My garmin does this if I have auto-pause turned on. Best I can tell is that STRAVA uses some type of average calculation between GPS datapoints from the Garmin (or whatever bike computer is being used) and so when the garmin detects no movement and pauses, the "speed" doesn't actually go to 0 registered, just some low number.

I ride on DC streets on a daily basis and realized pretty quickly that the tactic of darting in and out of the right lane to let cars pass would get me killed pretty quickly. Anyone faulting the cyclist for not doing this either knows nothing about cycling or wishes them dead.

If you are riding in the left lane and not moving to the right lane when it’s unobstructed you are breaking the law. No one cares what post hoc justifications you make up to rationalize it because no one believes you.

But sure, its the bikes that are dangerous

The first picture says that the car on the right was parked there. So the left lane is the only lane. The time stamp between the 3rd and 4th picture is multiple seconds apart and hasn't moved.

There is another picture posted that you don’t want to talk about. You undermine your own credibility with this kind of stuff, which then undermines your activism. Nobody believes cyclists anymore.

I am very curious as to your interpretation of the events depicted in the photo. If in your view the car did not run a yellow or a red light, then by process of elimination you must believe light must have been green when he passed through. However, for the light to have turned red while he was still in the intersection, three seconds must have elapsed. The intersection can't be more than 50 feet wide, which means that the car would have been doing at most 11 mph. If the car was doing 11 mph, how do you believe it managed to pass a cyclist going 16 mph?
