UMC suburban college student lied about background to become prestigious Rhodes Scholar

I find it interesting that she changed her name, like maybe she was trying to hide a past that didn't align with the narrative she was portraying. Or maybe she was emotionally traumatized and want to make a clean break with a rough childhood.
It seems pretty obvious to me that Penn was retaliating. Even if this young woman was a total fraud there was no reason for them to go digging into her past after she had already been accepted as a Rhodes Scholar. And then the alerted to Rhodes council to torpedo her scholarship. That smacks of payback to me.

My big takeaway from this is this; What kind of world are we living in where our most prestigious and sought after academic opportunity require some kind of hardship as a prerequisite? Wouldn't society be so much better off if we gave these opportunities to the most intelligent and industrious students regardless of their upbringing?

PP who is a med school interviewer… my friend was the director of admissions at a top med school and talked about how reading personal statements was like reading about peoples suffering and misery over and over. I do think it’s sad that being a regular UMC person isn’t seen as unique enough anymore- you can’t really play up this background in interviews with out being seen as privileged. Not sure the solution but the current status quo has messed up incentives for sure.

I think one of the most distasteful parts of this is penn expressing disappointment with her being involved in the other students wrongful death suit given “how many opportunities she’s been given at Pennies.” Gtfo out with the noblesse oblige/grateful serf routine, penn!

1. Her mother is a doctor
2. There was some kind of incident between mother and teenage daughter that led to abuse charges (later dropped)
3. The daughter was actually in foster care for a period of time
4. The daughter definitely embellished significant parts of her origin story

Wow, that's a lot. Fierceton sounds like she has a few screws loose, but maybe so does her mother?

And the bio mom ratted out the daughter after she had won the Rhodes (BTW Ivies, in particular, spend a lot of time selecting and grooming Rhodes' candidates - of course Penn would take it away, and diploma, if she faked her story, which her bio mom says she did).

You left out the 22 days in the hospital after her mother physically abused her.

22 days in the hospital with a feeding tube and no injuries says mental illness to me. Psych ward. Pediatric.

Yes, and most likely pseudoseizures. Video EEG as inpatient to capture readings during the episodes.

I suspect there is a lot not being discussed.

Most psych wards won’t take someone with a feeding tube- try again

DP. Mostly assuredly eating disorder unit will.

Ffs, people! This girl didn’t go on a murder spree-she may have presented her doubtless traumatic recent history in a melodramatic fashion. Perhaps she’s severely disturbed psychiatrically rather than medically compromised by her mothers abuse. I grant you that is possible! But wtf cares? She doesn’t deserve to be excoriated publicly for it even if we take the most skeptical view.

Think of all the students who DIDN'T lie and now have huge school debts.

she lied? what are you talking about?

What didn’t she lie about? Yes the essay is shaded. But her whole angle is lie to fit the mold for an Ivy education for very low cost. No she doesn’t deserve a Rhodes. She is so shifty it seems mental.

They gave her a feeding tube because she refused to eat. Despite having no significant injuries. Mental.

^^ it’s in the documents. Sorry so many. But there is a lot of detail already out there.

This seems like a classic example of what Twitter calls “white woman tears.” If Fierceton was not a young white woman, people would not be infantilizing her this way. She is an adult who filed a lawsuit. She can be the subject of discussion. If she weren’t an attractive young white woman, this notion that she should not be discussed would not even be entertained.

ah, so you can't.

I find it weird that there is a PP who was so insistent that it was Mackenzie’s mother who sent the anonymous complaint, and then doubled down and insisted that fact was in the article linked in the OP when challenged. I just read every single article linked in this thread and there is literally no indication whatsoever it was the mother who sent the complaint in.

So what gives, PP? Why the lies? It’s very strange behavior.

What documents? The Chronicle article says that she "presented with bruising" at the hospital, and:

But one of the nurses assigned to Fierceton, Sherry McClain, remembers washing blood out of Fierceton’s hair while helping her shower. She also remembers helping Fierceton walk to the bathroom because she was weak. “She was physically hurt, but even more so was how in shock she was,” McClain said in a recent interview. “She was just this vacant, broken, empty child.”

How are you getting she had no injuries? A nurse who treated her does not agree, and I think she would be a reliable witness.
