Getting rid of chipmunks

Anonymous
Short of calling an exterminator or trapper, has anyone have any success in getting rid of chipmunks around their homes?

Why would you want to? They are native, adorable and not terribly pesty.

Not the OP--but yes they are pests... They burrowed underneath our house. They do destroy property. Moth balls in holes are supposed to get them to leave. The smell is horrible though.

OP here. Thanks for the mothball suggestion. Any others? Please!

We trap a couple a week and dump them out across the river. Tunneling everywhere plus poop pellets everywhere. Not good for the kids. And the chirping!

We love our chipmunks! They are cute and don't seem to be doing any damage...Also good to know they chirp - i was wondering was that weird noise was.

O lordie we love our chipmunks. They are beyond adorable. Our neighbour told us they'd burrowed all around and under her home, so I'm pretending they might not have done the same to ours. They are just too adorable and our dog ignores them/thinks they are leaves blowing in the wind, so our backyard looks like a bambi scene with all the nature going on.

Not the OP, but after my son stepped in a chipmunk burrow while playing soccer in our backyard, twisted and sprained his ankle and was on crutches for a while, the adorableness factor pretty much went away. I want them out, but have no idea how to get them to go away. Will try mothballs, but since our yard (no pets) is surrounded by yards with dogs that enjoy chasing the neighborhood fauna, I have a feeling the chipmunks (and squirrels, rabbits, and foxes) will just keep coming back,

Ugh. Our dog digs like crazy searching for them... We gotta get rid of them. I'm not the OP but will appreciate any tips.

We have a preventative pest control contract. I'll ask the guy on Nov 1 appt what they can do and post it here.

Get a dog. Problem solved.

Cat. Mine is always bringing some "gifts" to us. Chipmunks, mice and squirrels.

Ours got into our walls a few years ago. We used an exterminator and then had some work done to seal up some gaps in our exterior. Haven't had a problem since although I do still see them in our yard from time to time.

Can you get them to start a band? Maybe they'll go on tour.
