| We are thrilled to be moving to Fairfax County in June 2013 and to have the opportunity to live in a great public school district. Our son will be entering 1st grade. What are the neighborhoods we should consider if we want the best of the best? Our budget on a home is apx. 1 million. |
Ugh, zero. Why would we want to live in the suburbs? You should really post this to the Virginia schools forum, not DC. |
| You're right. Will do. |
| ur budget is 1 Million? Hire someone to figure it out for you. |
| You can buy a beautiful home in 22307 or 22308. |
| My favorite zip codes for that price range with new homes are 22182 and 22043 |
| Burke is great, mextremely family friendly, near a VRE if necessary, with hmes ranging from condos to large single family homes. Anything off West Ox or Waples Mill area in the Oakton HS pyramid as well. Navy Elementary is great as are the majority of the schools in that pyramid. |
| The most important consideration is your commute. If you can tell us where you will be working we can help you find a good neighborhood nearby. With that budget there aren't many areas that will be totally off the table and you can definitely afford to buy in an excellent school district. |

Langley and McLean have the highest reputations among the FCPS high schools.
If you want a new home, then I'd look in the Madison or Oakton zones, you might be able to snag something for under 1mn. Woodson and Marshall are good too, but they don't have the same cachet as the first four I mentioned. If you can't find something you like for a million in those six HS zones you're either very fussy or not really wanting to move. |
| i would buy in mclean hamlet. |
| Ignore the VA haters... This is a wonderful place to raise a family. We moved from NYC and have never looked back. I'd look in 22182- particularly the area that feeds to Great Falls schools. There are also a few neighorhoods like Lockmeade that you can get into under $1m. |
I think McLean Hamlet (Langley HS district) would be a great choice, particularly if OP will be working around Tysons. If OP is working in DC, Potomac Hills (near the Arlington border in McLean HS district) is a good option, as are some of the neighborhoods off Linway Terrace. There is no problem "snagging something" under $1M in any of the six HS zones mentioned. Finding new SFH construction under $1M in those zones would be more difficult. |
Do you mean schools in the Langley HS pyramid? I don't think any students in 22182 attend schools in Great Falls. A few neighborhoods in 22182 are assigned to Colvin Run ES in Vienna and Cooper MS and Langley HS in McLean. You have to check the specific address in 22182 to know the school assignments. Kids in 22182 can be assigned to Marshall, Madison, McLean, South Lakes or Langley HS. |
No, I think there may be a few, actually, in 22182 that do go to GF schools. I am thinking in particular the neighborhood across 7 from Colvin Run Mill. . .the name of the neighborhood is escaping me at the moment. . . . it was the neighborhood whose entrance got totally flooded out about 18 months ago when we had that huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge rain storm. . .it took a few days for residents to be able to get in or out again b/c they had to rebuild the entrance into the neighborhood? Anyway, I had friends growing up who lived in that n'hood and they went to GF schools and then (later) to LHS. . . . |
