Jeff, please move this this to politics if I posted in the wrong place.
My sister lives in St. Louis. This morning, for two hours, a gas station in St. Louis allowed customers to purchase 10 gallons of gas at pre Obama prices. The price charged was $1.84 per gallon. My sister waited in line that wrapped around the block to get her gas. She filled up her tank 3/4 of the way full, for $18.40. http://fox2now.com/2012/10/19/150-drivers-get-gas-for-1-84-a-gallon/ The station was surrounded by citizens and truckers, all honking their horns in support as they drove by. Imagine how low the cost of living would be and how prosperous we would be if our nation was back to $2.00/gallon gas. |
| Gas was well over $3/gallon before Obama took office. |

Why, oh why, does no one remember the context of the supposed "pre-Obama" prices?
THE ECONOMY HAD CRASHED! The prices were only low for a couple weeks until we figured out the world was NOT ending. It has been a steady climb ever since. The prices just months before were well into the $4+/gallon. Stop spreading this insane bullshit. Fox itself said that a president has very little effect on gas prices - check the tape. Prices now have very little to do with our country or our production - it is mostly tied to demand elsewhere. And you realize we still pay much less than the rest of the world, right? |

First of all, you have to account for inflation:
http://www.consumerenergyreport.com/2012/02/27/how-high-have-gas-prices-risen-over-the-years/ The cost of living would be great if all prices stayed the same. But they rise. Second of all, prices fluctuate, and were much higher before Obama took office (from BLS) Year Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec 2002 1.139 1.130 1.241 1.407 1.421 1.404 1.412 1.423 1.422 1.449 1.448 1.394 2003 1.473 1.641 1.748 1.659 1.542 1.514 1.524 1.628 1.728 1.603 1.535 1.494 2004 1.592 1.672 1.766 1.833 2.009 2.041 1.939 1.898 1.891 2.029 2.010 1.882 2005 1.823 1.918 2.065 2.283 2.216 2.176 2.316 2.506 2.927 2.785 2.343 2.186 2006 2.315 2.310 2.401 2.757 2.947 2.917 2.999 2.985 2.589 2.272 2.241 2.334 2007 2.274 2.285 2.592 2.860 3.130 3.052 2.961 2.782 2.789 2.793 3.069 3.020 2008 3.047 3.033 3.258 3.441 3.764 4.065 4.090 3.786 3.698 3.173 2.151 1.689 2009 1.787 1.928 1.949 2.056 2.265 2.631 2.543 2.627 2.574 2.561 2.660 2.621 2010 2.731 2.659 2.780 2.858 2.869 2.736 2.736 2.745 2.704 2.795 2.852 2.985 2011 3.091 3.167 3.546 3.816 3.933 3.702 3.654 3.630 3.612 3.468 3.423 3.278 2012 3.399 3.572 3.868 3.927 3.792 3.552 3.451 3.707 3.856 |
I only said our nation would be much more prosperous if we would be at pre-Obama prices. How can you argue with that? [vimeo]Gas affects everything, from the price of plastic and other petroleum products, to the price of groceries. For people who must drive to get to work, paying 50% less in gas is the difference between feeding their families or not. In many places, like St. Louis, folks must drive to where the work is. They can't afford to sell and move, and they can't afford not to work. So they drive. A lot. My sister's car was on fumes, because she is one of these people who have to make these kinds of choices. She was crying after filling her car this morning. |
I agree. And those gas prices helped to tank the economy before. For people living paycheck to paycheck and making around $50,000/family, paying an extra $200/month in gas/car for months on end is enough of a change to put the family budget in freefall. |
Because your implication was that if it weren't for Obama or if we could go back to the good ole' pre-Obama days gas would be $1.80 but you are not accurately reflecting the averages prior to Obama! The prices were $3-4 a gallon. Why didn't you choose pre-Bush prices or Clinton? Of course, if gas was cheaper things would be easier but prices are basically what they were under Bush's second term and your implication was otherwise. Imagine how prosperous our nation would be if healthcare cost what it did before Bush took office...etc etc. This can go on and on. The question is what do we do about it. Presidents really cannot affect gas prices on a day to day basis (Bush couldn't and Obama can't unless the government takes over the oil and gas industry). But policies they support can help us be less dependent on gas (more fuel efficient cars for example). I'm glad your sister got a good deal though, and am sorry that she's struggling. But she'd likely be paying $3.50ish regardless of who got elected in 2008--unless we hadn't avoided another great depression, in which case, gas might be a steal. |
Do you propose the government set the prices? It's the supply/demand market right? |
| AND St Louis beat the Nats. Another kick in the pants. |
lol Go Cards |
| Yes, it is a supply and demand economy. When the government is controlling the supply, which impacts the demand, which impacts the price, aren't they in effect controlling the price of gas? |
Imagine if we could somehow get their health care costs under control: http://money.cnn.com/2011/05/11/news/economy/healthcare_costs_family/index.htm |
Not my implication. The gas station selling the gas is charging a pre-Obama price. Not a pre-Bush or pre-Clinton price, but a pre-Obama price. I am sure she would be crying if she were getting pre/1st term Bush prices as well. You are too sensitive. |
Yes. |
