I am a man who is also a nanny. I was wondering if there is a part of the country more accepting of male nannies?
The vibe in this area has changed in the last 5 years. I've had a couple of people send me emails saying "can't wait to speak with you" but after they here my voice on the phone their tone changes and they make an excuse and hang up without even discussing my background or experience. I'm just frustrated because my resume is filled with years of childcare experience which makes it hard to get a job anywhere else. Please don't say try a daycare center or preschool. High ratios and low pay are not for me. Vent over. |
| I'm sorry to hear this, OP. While I would like to say I would have an open mind and hire you.....I probably wouldn't. |
|
Id looove to have a male nanny for my boys, but the thought terrifies me. Sad since I'm a mom to male children.
How would you feel if a parent confronted you in a very direct manner about their bias and fears? How would you feel if a parent had cameras all over the house? |
|
Do you have a gender neutral name? I'm just trying to figure out how this is not established after seeing your resume or profile.
|
| Surely you understand, OP, that people think all men who wish to be childcare providers are sexual molesters? |
| Nope, just wouldn't do it, even though I have boys that would probably love to have a guy to roughhouse with. But the reality is that I think it is odd that a man would want to spend his time being a nanny. I actually think that it is odd that a woman would want to do it, but I understand it could be a fun job. But for a man....just doesn't make sense. OP, tell us what led you to becoming a nanny and why it is something you want to consider continuing. Also, are you married? In a relationship? Gay? My first thought is gay man, or a man who has issues with relationships. Totally ridiculously biased, I know, but it is what comes to my mind. |
So you're willing to hire a male nanny? |
|
If you move to the UK you can register for
http://www.mrnanny.com If you are cute, try getting a job with a SAHM or WAHM. Nannies don't seem to like those arrangements, and I'm sure moms wouldn't mind a little eye candy that they could supervise. |
No, I have no need for a nanny. And, as I just said, people think they're child molesters. Why would I hire a child molester? |
|
OP here,
Thanks I feel a lot better now. (I wish Jeff would install the sarcasm font) |
I'm sorry OP. The responses you got are sad. 50 years ago the problem was misogyny, now the problem is misandry. We aren't quite at equality yet, the pendulum is still swinging from too far in one direction to too far in the other. |
| NP here. So much sexism on this board. FTR, I would have no problem hiring a male nanny if I could afford a nanny. No weirder for a man to enjoy working with children than a woman. |
I am thinking of the "Pat" SNL sketch! ...and also how sad it is that that sketch wouldn't be allowed these days. |
OP here, I don't have a genger neutral name. |
| NP here. I would have loved a male nanny for my two boys. Someone brought it up before and I'm curious too. Is your name gender neutral? how do they not know you are a male before they hear your voice. Perhaps you can somehow indicate that on your resume so you wont have to go through the disappointment like that again?? |
