Have you taken cooking classes at Sur La Table on Pentagon Row?

We took a few of their free "how to cook for Thanksgiving" classes in SF, and found them really useful.

Would they work for a total beginner? Like no cooking experience whatsoever?

I took a few. One was cake decorating class and the other was on summer BBQ. I learned some about cake decorating in the cake calss. The other cooking class was more-here are some rescipes we will make together. They do some of the work that takes longer. After the food is prepared everyone leaves for a bit and they set it up for a meal. It is a nice activity, but not sure that I learned a ton. I think there are certainly less expensive options through the county. I think a knife skill class would be really useful for a beginner.

I also think a class that focuses on a specific cooking skill would be useful.

We took a Mexican cooking class there - it was really good and we made a delicious meal. It turns out we had the same instructor at Culinaerie a year later! Both times we asked for some info about rare to find ingredients and she gave us a baggie full from her own stash!

I would say you'll get something out of them (they gave hosting tips too, like that you take the turkey out of the oven, show it so people can ooh and ahh, but NEVER cut the turkey in front of guests - it's a difficult, slippery, hot, messy task that does not look pretty like it seems in movies and commercials), but maybe not as much as they intend for you to get? My DH is the cook of the house, and we both went - he got more out of it than I did, but I was glad I'd gone too.

I've found their employees to be really helpful so you could call up and say "I've never cooked a turkey and can't make rice - will your class work for me?"
