A member of our team took a position elsewhere. She sent an email to us with her personal email to keep in touch, and a quote from Paterno (see below.) She ended the email with, "This quote says it all!"
”When a team outgrows individual performance and learns team confidence, excellence becomes a reality.” - Joe Paterno Really? I don't feel like responding to her with the obligatory "farewell", "you will be missed," etc. I should, but can't bring myself to do it. I need a reality check. Am I being too sensitve? |
| Regardless of the unfortunate origin of the quote, I'd say good riddance to anyone who uses cheesy corporate-speak like that. |
| Yes, get off your high horse. You are being way too sensitive. Paterno's quote is right on, even if he made mistakes. |
|
Dear Colleague,
On behalf of all of us, I'd like to wish you much success. This quote says it all "Be careful whose toes you step on today, they might be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow." - Old Proverb Sincerely, The Team |
| You are being too sensitive. She's saying that she likes the quote, not Joe Paterno. |
|
Way too sensitive. Maybe she went to Penn State and is still a fan. There are plenty of those people out there. And while Paterno's behavior was, in retrospect, reprehensible, he was not the molester.
The email is generally dumb, but I woudn't overreact to the Paterno quote. |
|
Please it is TACKY.
1. Tacky because quotes are tacky, in just about any capacity, especially at work. 2. Very distasteful to quote someone who enabled serial child molester to abuse dozens of children. I'd say don't let the door smack you on the ass on your way out. buh-bye. |
OP here. I am not on a high horse. This same platitude has been said by many others. No need to celebrate Paterno. Hell, I am just grumpy. |
| I agree, it was in poor taste to use that quote. It would be like quoting OJ Simpson. |
+1 And her decision to quote this person (knowing it would possibly be offensive) sends a message as well. She wants you all to know she believes you need to be a better team, and she supports Paterno. |
Reply with a good luck and, - "The day you take complete responsibility for yourself, the day you stop making any excuses, that's the day you start to the top." O. J. Simpson |
| I think it's sort of tacky to offer advice of any kind regarding team cohesion when you're leaving the team. |
| Wow! What a tacky way to leave! Highly inappropriate. |

Yes. Absolutely agree. |
