Is tilapia a fancy meal for kids??

Anonymous
I made the kids tilapia for dinner tonight and my sister, who called during dinner, went on and on about their "fancy" meal. It wasn't the preparation, it was the tilapia that floored her. Really? We kind of fell into it because they were tired of salmon but I wasn't going to buy halibut all the time, so tilapia seemed like a good thing to try. The kids like it, seem to eat it without tears and it works. Her reaction was so strange that I looked at the price on the wrapper! ($6.99/lb, also didn't seem way pricey.) Sister has kids of similar ages, no money issues, and grew up on the same good seafood I did.

Am I way off base? And if I am, what the heck do I feed 3 kids under 6 who refuse to eat chicken, turkey or anything with sauce??

No. Tilapia is not a fancy meal.

You are way over thinking this. Your sister sounds a bit insecure and probably doesn't know what tilapia is.

Not a fancy meal, we eat tilapia all the time. My kids love it and it's easy to prepare in different ways (more versatile than salmon IMO)

Even if it WAS a fancy meal, who says kids can't get fancy meals?!

I would just limit their intake of tilapia--especially if it's farmed in China. They are bottom feeding fish that are major predators and threaten native species. Haha fish racism...but it's true: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_factsheet.aspx?gid=69

Yup, bottom feeders so how can they be part of a fancy meal? We used to use them as bait fish.

foie gras is just liver fat, yet it can raise the price of a meal by upwards of $35

Your sister is misinformed. Tilapia has become really common in the US over the past several years, and it is nothing fancy. It's bland, which is probably why kids don't object.

Our twins are one year old and since they started to self-feed a couple of months ago, we mix up what we give them so that they get a wide variety of tastes. One of the proteins that we mix in periodically is tilapia. I get it in individual portions at Sam's club and we just lightly steam it in the microwave. They like it. It's just one of the various proteins that we give them.

Who knew that we were giving one year old toddlers "fancy meals"?

Actually, I always thought tilapia are basically cheapy fish -the kind of fish used in immigrant cooking.

"Immigrant cooking"? You mean cooking by people from different cultures? You mean people who don't eat hamburgers and hotdogs all the time?

Nope. Its a rather bland, easy to prepare fish. Not fancy unless you are serving with wine and candles.
