Or know of anyone who is? I think this will not hurt Mitt b/c most people do not think of themselves as in the 47% or having been in the 47%. Both Mitt(through his father) and Ryan(welfare when his father died) were in the 47%. Its like middle class, everyone thinks they are middle class. |
I wish I was.
Maybe I can count the World bank, IMO people? They are Obama voters, though. I can not think of anybody else. |
I've been in the 47th % Club and have family who are now in the 47th % Club. Had family who lives in public housing while growing up.
And I am not enamoured of Obama or Romney. |
If you are not in the 47% that pays no income tax and you want to be part of that group, for the low, low fee of $1,000 I will tell you how.
|
Anyone who is currently on Medicare, Medicaid and/or Social Security is in the 47%. If you have a parent who died and you received SSDI, you were in the 47%. If you are deployed military in theatre or in rehab at Walter Reed, etc, you are in the 47%. If you have a special needs adult child with health coverage under Medicaid, you are n the 47%. If you are a family of five with household income less than 50%, you are in the 47%.
The vast majority of folks in the 47% are hard working white folks, some still working, others retired. Many will still vote for Romney, not realizing that Ryan is salivating at the prospects of ripping away their hard earned benefits as quickly as he can. Alas, people can be working two jobs in this country, paying their local/state taxes as well as payroll taxes, but still, according to the GOP, not have "skin in the game." |
I have been in the 47% at age 40 and my parents and siblings have been in the 47% at one time or another. I completely agree with the OP's opinion that the video is not going to CHANGE anybody's vote. (We'll skip for now the part about how Mitt may actually be pretty competitive among that 47% group.)
This is a "base" election and the most significant fallout may be that a lot of us Obama voters are going to be sure to vote and will make sure that all of our friends do to. |
My mom is receiving Social Security after retiring and my dad and FIL are receiving unemployment after losing their jobs in the past year. My BIL's kids were on WIC and Medicaid for a while.
I don't think either of us has personally been in this "hated group." But I've been trying to figure out - does this include folks who get money back at tax time because their deductions, exemptions, etc erase tax liability? Because a LOT of families, even at higher than the poverty level, fall into that category - they do pay some small amount in their paycheck, but get it back and then some come refund time. |
FYI, world bank/IMF employees who are us citizens do pay taxes, and in fact have to pay self-employment tax. It's just organized differently.
|
We are a military family, so we are in the 47% based on our healthcare, GI Bill and itemized deductions. We pay taxes, but my husband receives a very low rate, only on his base pay. We received a $120 tax return last year. If it weren't for my job (90k) we would be solidly within the 47%.
All of our family members are in the 47%, but they don't live in this area. |
I am not now, but I was for the past 5 years.
The last 3, I was working full-time, but I'm single with a kid and I was making less than $25K. Last year, I was unemployed for 3mo due to a move and I made $18K total. I got everything back, plus the EITC. The money helped me pay off debt and get back on my feet. I also qualified for daycare assistance, WIC and my son qualified for Medicaid his 1st year and CHIP until I got my current job. I qualified for Medicaid during my pregnancy and immediately afterwards. Then I went 2yrs without insurance, which I'm paying for now as I left things untreated (mainly my teeth). I'm white, raised in an UMC family, and I have a BA. I also made the mistake of marrying a deadbeat, although I wised up when DC was 8mo and divorced him. We lived in a very conservative area where jobs were scarce and didn't pay well. In the past 18mo, I've more than doubled my income and I'll be paying income tax this year. I have no problem paying, I'm grateful there was a safety net and help when I needed it and I hope that others are able to get that hand-up that I received. I'll be voting for Obama in Nov. |
Oops, I forgot about my husband's GI Bill money that allowed him to get an electrical engineering degree with very little out of pocket from us and the VA Loan that allowed us to buy our house last year. Damn, I AM the 47% ;P Now where are my gov't issued filet mignons that I am entitled to? |
9:54, you are an inspiration! |
My ILs are retired and collect social security. They also have a lot of savings and a pension, but they probably don't pay income tax, right?
I know my FIL is voting for Mit and probably thinks the 47% comment was awesome. |
Maybe you should have made better decisions with who you married and decided to have a child with. |
I ran a marathon, so that puts me in the 1%, as only 1% have ever ran one. One day I plan to be as fast as lying ryan, but now that I think about it, I might already be even faster than him
Do not ask my income as that is low. |
