The whole Libya and Egypt reaction to that offensive video makes me fear the internet even more

One idiot create and incredibly offensive video and it spread like wildfire and negatively impacted our relationship with some countries in the Middle East. One idiot did this. People are dead now who would be alive if this video had never been created and disseminated.

I fear what moronic things my kids might do before they know better. The internet never forgets and it can be such a dangerous tool.

Look at all the man power involved in responding to the reaction in the Middle East. One american set this off. Mindboggling.

As a Jew, it is all the more painful to me to know this man was Jewish on so many levels. He has made his country less safe, he represented Jews poorly and his fellow Jews are even bigger targets now.

LInk? No idea what you're referring to.

CNN is reporting that the attack in Libya was planned in advance. They are unsure if the attackers instigated the protest or just used the protest as cover.

Frankly, what American had even heard of the movie before this? But in all reality -- they were going to attack movie or no movie. That is why they are terrorists.

Yea, blame that guy. Not the people carrying out the attacks. Ignore the real issue at hand here, which is the religion of "peace" known as Islam.

What I think is crazy is what this "Arab Spring" brought us, many more fanatics in lawless despotic countries.

Why on earth should the filmmaker be brought up on charges? For criticizing a religious figure? Making fun of someone's faith? Depicting a religious figure in unseemly situations?

Not illegal here in America.

Do I agree with what he did, no. Does he share responsibility, yes. But what he did is no different than artists who deface crucifixes, depict Jesus in negative ways, etc. The blame lies solely at the hands of the fanatics.

In addition to all the other questions surrounding this awful story, there are now reports that raise real doubts about the purported filmmaker. (Google Jeff Goldberg's blog at the Atlantic for details.) This film was stupid and absurd, and as far as I can tell, no one still knows who made it and why. I'm not a conspiracy theorist - just trying to clarify that the original reports that this was a film made by an American Jew or with Israeli support may be totally concocted.

And btw I've seen the video (got sent the link yesterday before all this came out) and it's beyond ridiculous. I'm pretty sure my 3rd grader could write a more sophisticated script and produce something more professional (and he's not a terribly mature 3rd grader either!)

Is this a blog? This article seems more interested in clearing Isreal then get facts. Who the fuck is Steve Klien and how does he know anything about this movie? Very fishy stuff.

As part of my search for more information about Sam Bacile, the alleged producer of the now-infamous anti-Muhammad film trailer "The Innocence of Muslims," I just called a man named Steve Klein -- a self-described militant Christian activist in Riverside, California (whose actual business, he said, is in selling "hard-to-place home insurance"), who has been described in multiple media accounts as a consultant to the film.

Klein told me that Bacile, the producer of the film, is not Israeli, and most likely not Jewish, as has been reported, and that the name is, in fact, a pseudonym. He said he did not know "Bacile"'s real name. He said Bacile contacted him because he leads anti-Islam protests outside of mosques and schools, and because, he said, he is a Vietnam veteran and an expert on uncovering al Qaeda cells in California. "After 9/11 I went out to look for terror cells in California and found them, piece of cake. Sam found out about me. The Middle East Christian and Jewish communities trust me."
He said the man who identified himself as Bacile asked him to help make the anti-Muhammad film. When I asked him to describe Bacile, he said: "I don't know that much about him. I met him, I spoke to him for an hour. He's not Israeli, no. I can tell you this for sure, the State of Israel is not involved, Terry Jones (the radical Christian Quran-burning pastor) is not involved. His name is a pseudonym. All these Middle Eastern folks I work with have pseudonyms. I doubt he's Jewish. I would suspect this is a disinformation campaign."

I asked him who he thought Sam Bacile was. He said that there are about 15 people associated with the making of the film, "Nobody is anything but an active American citizen. They're from Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, they're some that are from Egypt. Some are Copts but the vast majority are Evangelical."

What are we to make of Steve Klein's assertions? I'm taking everything about this strange and horrible episod with a grain of salt, though I will say that I haven't seen any proof yet that Sam Bacile is an actual Israeli Jew, or that the name is anything other than a pseudonym. More to come, undoubtedly.

UPDATE: Here's a link to a story about Klein's anti-Islam protests.

Educate yourself on the countless good works of John Paul II, or Mother Teresa. Or any number of Christian charities (who do MUCH more good than evil, since I know you will bring up well-publicized incidents from various religious backgrounds, ignoring the massive charity that Christian organizations do).

Yes. Crucifix floating in urine as "art," anyone?
